Where Heroes Fall and Die
I am the sands of time dragging beneath their feet,
And the monster that shows them their ways.
I watch them stumble blindly forward, swords in hand.
I am the place where heroes fall and die.
I am the small voice in their head that whispers, “You’re going to die”
They know me well and listen, blind to other judgments.
Some shout “Be gone demon, I shall slay my foe!”
But something, I know, they cannot control.
Achilles fell in love then lost to his weak heel.
Hercules became a mortal and died of a mortal’s old age.
Soldiers in Vietnam fought a senseless battle,
And I was there to watch them all shatter.
I am the warrior they meet in the battlefield and
The Minotaur that blocks them from their path.
I am the snake that slithers in their corridors
And the rat that hides among their men.
I am the sands of time dragging beneath their feet
Leading them to the place where heroes fall and die.
