I really agree 
babies come out the same way, and people go to same ground no matter who is what.
i think the director and story writer made much tragedy by separating the couple, lovers, he added more sadness to all who died. Other wise intensity does nt quantify for the oscar, though nothing was made real, great artistry, in making the movie excpet costumes.
They kept the Kissing scene as reason for death making the one of couple death for sorrow or blame i dont know.

anyways i liked the lines and intent you clearly expressed so well.
I never like sad ending killing the hero heroine, in south esp we dont make the movies killing hero heroine then that movie is a big flop no one wants to see them dying.
