The wind crashed into my face, burning my eyes as my heart pounded up against my ribcage. The wind whipped my hair back and I closed my eyes. Despite the harsh winds I kept on moving, each step I took feeling as if a single thin blade was cutting my arms and my face. My breathing was coming out in short, quick gasps as the two opposite forces pushed up against one another. It seemed as if the wind was beginning to win. Rocks tumbled down the steep mountain and a shiver ran up my spine as I pictured myself falling off the ledges into a black abyss below.
I sucked in a deep breath of air before moving on the thin line between life and death. My hands seemed as if they were glued to the rocks on the right side of me as I gripped for something to keep my equilibrium when the wind pushed against me. The water beneath rushed with a rage that sounded like roaring in my ears. They ringed with irritation, and I placed my hands over my ears to stop it all. As I placed my foot forward I could feel myself tipping sideways and my foot meeting thin air.
My eyes snapped open and the salt water stung my eyes. The next thing I knew I was falling head first into the wintry water below me. Muscles stiffened as I collided with the water. The noise was thundering in my ears, and I let out a scream only to see the bubbles flowing from my mouth. I struggled upward, forcing my way forward and up just to get the air that I longed for. My head finally reached the surface as I gasped for air and started to splash around for something to grab onto.
Nothing came; the tide began pushing me forward and downstream, my screams sheltered by the roar. My body was thrust into rocks by the flux of the current. My body began to tremble and I could feel my body become immobile. My head hung back and my eyes rolled to the back of my head, my body starting to concede before it was even over. Although my body was beginning to be submerged under the water, my ears went deaf to the noise and I could hear a soft voice calling my name.
Maybe death wasn't something to be afraid of, once you experience it looking at you, it doesn't feel horrific. Maybe just quick, like cutting a string with one snip of the scissors. Although, the thought of just disappearing from this life was startling, thinking about where is it you would go next was something that I did fear. The struggle of dying was fierce, but it was quick. Your oxygen cut off just like that, drowning was not in the least bit as bad as they portrayed it to be. Coming upon this mountain I thought it would be easy, but I believe I was foolish to think of such a thing.
On a trail where every step you took was a death trap, and saying that I could do it alone was not the least bit true. I needed someone to be by my side and help me through this journey where the winter was just as fierce as the blistering sun during summer days. My body, I hoped, would not exist in this aquatic cemetery. Somehow, I hoped that it would be found so it could be fed to the ground to be eaten and rotted away in the sarcophagus that it was meant to-be fed to.
My name was still being called. It was a sound of urgency that kept me aware of the balminess around me. It clung onto my arms and my legs, especially my face. "Wake up." The voice called. That was when I noticed the movement that seemed to rock me back and forth like a cradle would a baby. Something warm touched my lips, and then pressure was placed on my chest where it seemed something was going up through my lungs. I began choking, when again, the same warm sensation touched my lips and the pressure came again.
This time I coughed, the pain immediately burning my throat that made it feel as if it was fire. My eyes opened, concentrating on that pain. My hands numbly groped for my throat hoping that, in some way, it would help. A sigh of relief was heard, my eyes slowly moved to the dull, veiled figure above me. My hair was still wet as it was pasted on my face. My body was still frozen and stiff when I tried to move, the only that kept me down was his hand softly placed on my cheek.
"I'm so glad, that I have found you." The man's voice whispered. He brushed my hair from my face while his other hand pulled me closer towards his heated body, without a second thought I snuggled into him for my own existence. My thoughts about death crumbled, death was chilling now that I was alive again. But for that moment I saw the dawn of a new light.
