messy moments

messy moments

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

messy moments
the kind that embarrass you
the kind you're certain you'll never look back on fondly
they are absolutely impossible to predict
even though still water runs deep
just as emotions do
but can someone tell me why
there is no laugh track
for the messy moments?
something to indicate
this will be significant one day
(i mean at least we would pay attention
with our spare change)
i guess what I am saying is
there is no room for fear
because someday
they will all go up in flames
and the messy moments
will be nothing but charred shadows.

The messy moments of life rarely make the final edit to our anthology that is life, but they are just as important as all the rest.
They may not define the shell that everyone sees, but they do to ourselves snd we learn from them all the same, no matter how we wish we could get one more shot at getting them right.
Buylt life rarely gives us do-overs, does it Lydi?
If my life were a movie, it would be a short without the messy moments, yet it would be an anthology with them.
I never look back on them fondly, but they still keep visiting!

oh ... meesy moments ... they bugger us all the time ... no going back can change them it seems .. no new interpretation can smooth ... irom them out .. we may have blown it or someone/something else created them for us .. Lydi, for me you hit on a very complexing thing ... they are not like the grieving pain of loss that actually can be let go over time ... but messy moment, I find I can't help masticating them over and over trying to glean some bit of wisdom ... but alas .. the moment had passed. the next one that insists on my attention, i will try to remember your poem and just put the mess to rest ;)

Since we can no change them, better to either laugh at them or forget them! Thanks so much, E. Lyd.. read more
Hi Lydia
I found your poem to be quite appropriate for an incident with my husband the other night ; not the first time either… he fell in the sidewalk trying to pick up his walking stick ( 90 yrs old) down on the ground .. bruised … and terribly embarrassed … how will will react to this moment nobody knows; but to your point, does every “messy “ incident have to be looked upon as fear?? Couldn’t we look back and joke about it? Or will it haunt us for years to come, very critical and important thoughts;
Warmly, B🌷🌷

Thanks so much. Lydi**
Messy moments are when you realise you're not perfect! Also. they teach you a lesson: how to laugh at yourself. shake yourself down and.. 'start all over again!

'Charred shadows for sure but, it can be warmer in Winter, promising in Spring, memory in Summer and then .. you start all over again.. with caution!

My pleasure. Off and away to Dreamland soon - 01.39 UK time.
Wow. Lately most moments seem messy, but, yes, someday they will be pretty insignificant. ~Jim

They are embarrassing to many, fear of repetition to others, traumatic in some cases.
We all have those Lydi and they are part and parcel of what make us human.
I like to learn my lessons from them and move on to better things.
Excellent title and content.
