another april

another april

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

Family gathered around the television, 1950-60s Our beautiful pictures are available as Framed Prints, Photos, Wall Art and Photo Gifts

against the azure blue of the april sky
i thought i saw you
it must have been you
still alive in my memories
frozen in time
hell, we are practically the same age now
diamonds still dance in your green eyes
though my sapphire eyes are a bit teary
just remembering
marzipan cakes
candles willing wishes to come true
dutch birthday songs
sung off key, but ever filled with love
yes, there was always love
oh, and old spice
        (or was it aqua velva?)
so i lift my glass of water
(yup, it is still stained with red lipstick)
after all, i am the last one standing
i swallow the lump in my throat
wishing us all…the april babies...
the courage to smile through another year

All mine were in December causing Mother to say. "You are only having one present for birthday and Christmas, I'm not made of money you know". And she wasn't and we did.
Excellently relateable poem even so.

Things were quite different back then, weren't they? Thanks for the review, Ken. Lydi***
Happy belated Birthday wishes Lydi. Sorry I missed this one in the month of April, but, better late than never...maybe? Though it doesn't really matter what month, I am always a fan of your poetry.

Needless to say I forgot your birthday but, big BUT - to compensate will fly over on my broomstick and bring you a bouquet of sweet smelling apologies, dear Lydi . Apart from that, your poem is embroidered with wonderful memories and times always precious. Many thanks for sharing - as ever always.

So much for my memory!
I just love this...like Leave it to Beaver...the real family thing.
We used to watch Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea---
My dad wore nothing but Old Spice...he could have been a spokesperson for them.
Happy April Birthday Lydi...two days away...

The last one standing. Both gratitude and bereavement linger in those words. It appears the others are all gone now, but this is the way of all flesh. It sounds to me as though you have been most fortunate.
