the last week

the last week

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

it’s the last week of the year
i open my silk scarf
storing in it all my worries and woes
they are yesterday’s news after all
my thoughts climb to the top “our” hill
your laughter still echoes there
the scent of your ginger spiced cologne
continues to entice

opening the scarf
i allow the breeze to fling it all into the universe
into the endless abyss where you now reside

yes, it’s the last week of the year
another year
that apparently was not the year
to forget all about you

We mark the days, weeks and years after our loved ones depart. We try to control when we forget them or how we face their memories and yet it becomes so hopeless an exercise in the face of love. All the contents flung into the universe and still they return to linger, to touch us again and again. So much truth and sadness felt in your words, my friend.

Scents and memories can open floodgates, even to those who thought it all forgotten Lydi.
They are so interconnected that I truly believe our favourite tastes and scents traverse the beyond the normal five scents and in grain themselves into our favourite tastes, for far more than their constituent parts.
I must remember to check out that ginger spiced cologne though, as that sounds like a cure all for all that ails me.
I don't know how I missed this one, but am glad I did as it has gave me something "new" to read, while you tease us all with making us wait for more 😊
Hope you are well dear lady and life is being kind to you.

There are those special people that enter our lives and never depart. No matter time nor distance, they ever reside, haunting us even when we think we have moved on. The sadness lingers like the scent of that ginger spiced cologne.

I think dropping every baggages before entering a New year is very essential. Entering into the year with no worries, no malice, no holding on to what is meant to leave. Just walking into it with peace of mind and hoping for greater possibilities.

And it might be really different when it comes to those things we love.

Happy New year.

Thank you Mauricio! Happy New Year.
Sounds like an effective mental device for letting go of the past. Some parts of it are easier to release than others, though.
