truth

truth

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

truth

created from thoughts of the moment

like a weaver at the loom

we each create our own truth

knotting concept to concept

word to word

then planting and nurturing that truth

scattered seeds of opinions of others

can help to make the truth bloom

or can just as easily stifle its growth

an invisible line divides

your truth from mine

yours lives in yesterday

and mine leaps into tomorrow

to keep the peace

i might accept your truth

even handle it gently

but for now

agreement is not in my repertoire

Everyone's version of the truth is different.... perhaps there is no truth to begin with, it's a story we weave together to help us understand what could be held as true.

The last stanza

to keep the peace

"i might accept your truth
even handle it gently
but for now
agreement is not in my repertoire" couldn't have been more true, sometimes we can't see the other person's perspective... but sometimes we learn to accept another person's version of the truth. Interesting topic for a poem and great picture to go with it! I might see a lady in that picture, but someone else might just see shapes. Both of them are true, but you have to change your perspective to get both truths.

LOL well, perhaps I exaggerated a tad, but I am definitely not an artist with paints.
Your words dear Lydi** are particularly relevant in today's divisive climate. Your final stanza echoes my own thoughts, except you have said it so eloquently, your final line so decisive. I will listen to the other point of view, not to do so would be ignorant, but that doesn't mean I will change my own perspective. Fabulous write.

There is such a fine line between truth and delusion. One is uncompromising while the other is the stuff of biased fantasy. Unfortunately, we live currently in a world of alternative facts. Which in the past was referred to as "lies". Trying to deal with the idiocy to uncover the truth can be quite exhausting. Especially when dealing with disingenuous purveyors of misinformation who state without irony, "Don't believe your lying eyes." Thank you for sharing your poem with us.

Very true. People believe all sorts of things to make themselves happier. I appreciate your review.. read more
Interesting picture of subjectivity in this one. The speaker shows an awareness of how one person's perception of the truth may differ from another's, and how accommodation is made to that situation. Another interesting facet of the poem is its observation that one's version of the truth may not be totally original, but can be influenced by the opinions of others. Likes especially the last stanza, where the speaker reserves the right to disagree. Tactfully, of course.

Wowzy! I do agree and I echo what you say marvelously. Wise words especially I like the ending too.
Truth can be relative to the speaker. It is based on our knowledge, experiences, influences, misinformation, falsehoods of history, bias, injustice, defamation, racism and so forth. A mixture of many things to make our truth or world view.
I love the paiting too...
