back then

back then

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork courtesy of saatshi art on pinterest

back then

i saw you

the unknown drew me in

the sun spilled out of my pockets

the sea air curled my hair

back then

we had eternity to fulfill our dreams

till infinity to write it all down

i smiled as i disappeared into a dream

you held my hand and followed

back then

i opened the dictionary

and found your photo

defining passion

or was it desire?

back then

we drank from the bottle of youth

you bent down to kiss me

as the grass on the dunes bent in the breeze

eternity flashed by

dystopia has replaced the dream

I find myself wishing we could wish our way to

back then

A beautiful, bitter-sweet poem, Lydia! Lyrical, and rich in imagery, you express the way many of us feel, looking back on our lives. So many killer lines here - "i smiled as i disappeared into a dream/you held my hand and followed" being right at the forefront for me! The final stanza says it all really - exquisite pain we would not have missed for the world! I am deeply moved by your words!

Such words of love remembered. The whole structure is spell binding. Words of time passing.

'back then we drank from the bottle of youth', how exciting and new those times were. The years flash by. I look back now and smile, but I don't wish myself back there. There was a tinge of sadness in your lines Lydi**.. Beautiful poetry. Wishful thinking from you.

Indeed, eternity does have a way of flashing by. I pick up a feeling of sorrow in this one, especially in the words "dystopia has replaced the dream." It's a normal feeling; we all have them. But in the end, they just take away from our appreciation of now.

How wise you are, John! Thank you so much for your review. Lydi**
I especially like the sun in the pocket part,
and finding the photo in the dictionary.

I like the image of grass bending....much like lovers leaning into each other.

Lines overflow with beauty in remembrance of the good ole' days. Sweet sensations come to mind. Painting is awesome, too.
