smooth stones

smooth stones

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

"jumping" by belen sambucety

back then
i had not figured out
the plot of my life
was not mine to write

each morning
the seaweed strangled the shoreline
but you pointed out the smoothest stones
nestled between the ugliness

and those shells
i almost believed i could hear someone
whispering the secrets of life to me
when i held one up to my ear

you taught me to listen to life
even when it was silent
we stacked moments on top of sand castles
only to watch them be washed away
at high tide

life had its way with me
over and over again
but those lessons got me through

today at dawn i greeted the shoreline
remembering...missing you
still searching for smooth stones

I really like this one. But I'm reminded that stones only become smooth from constant wear; their jagged edges taken from them by tumbling over and over, scratching and scraping until all the corners are rounded smooth. I learned this from the mountain streams; searching for garnets and agates in the river beds. I sometimes wonder if stones look at the sand and see their end. Or perhaps they see purpose reborn in rounding others smooth as their own history. Thank you for the beautiful poetry. F.

We, even when young and shiny, were never as smooth as we thought Lydi. Before the days came that intruded on thoughts we controlled our own destiny, much like the after shock of a crime victim, knowing that it isn't always ours to control. But here we are, all the wiser and mature (allegedly) looking back on those days we thrived in our lack of control and remembering our lessons learned along the way.
There are still some to learn though, especially if like me, some of those lessons learned were from the clumsiness of self that resulted in one too many head knocks.
Is it any wonder we still see those cartoon birds tweeting round our heads ocassionally? Or is that just me? I shall smile, wonder and remember next time I'm on the shore and those smooth stones catch my eye.

Such a beautiful poem Lydi**. The shoreline also brings special memories back to me. I have my own with sandcastles, stones and seashells.Three members of my family, and I have written a poem for each one. This poem is a favourite of mine, poignant and vivid with its imagery. Wonderful writing and your posted artwork a perfect match.

Chris, there is no place more special than the beach if you ask me. Walking there early in the morn.. read more
this is so beautiful. And when we can hear what is through the silence, there might be something or someone missing, but there is also a sense of peace and reckoning.
No reviews yet? Good grief....Silence is here at WC.
