the summer of roses

the summer of roses

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

it was the summer of roses
we knew it all
and what we did not know we faked
cotton candy clouds
gave way to crimson sunsets
and us
walking along the shore
salt water licking our toes
temptation nibbling on our psyches
smoke rings filling the sea air
i felt the beat of the music
and then you
yea, you were my favorite melody
absolutely #1 with a bullet
till you danced me to the edge
and, silly me, i refused to jump
that night i swore to the bathroom mirror
love would never mess up my life again
not like it did
in that summer of roses

So beautiful dear Lydia. I had to read again.
"and us
walking along the shore
salt water licking our toes
temptation nibbling on our psyches
smoke rings filling the sea air
i felt the beat of the music
and then you"
I loved the above lines. So gentle, so sweet and so loving. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry my dear friend.

I love your work dear Lydia and you are welcome.
To start I love the title and the picture!!! Such beautiful write this is and so enchanting from start to finish, though the last part is about being afraid of how much love can mess up ones life...
Great imaginary, the reader is so focus on what will happen next. I truly enjoy it!!!
Stay well sweetie

Wow! So beautiful with a tinge of nostalgia mixed with some rejection. This is like a love story unfolding with your gorgeous imagery unfurling our imagination. I love the image too you accompanied. You have weighed your options, the risk, gain...You have selected and that is admirable ....

How beautifully poignant this write is Lydi**. A reminder that there are not always happy endings. You took me on a nostalgia trip back to those early romances which brought on a smile. Thank you for that.

nothing risked nothing gained eh Lyid!? ;) the summer of love ... later observers called it a phenomenon .. isn't that something .. a time of utopian idealism .. divisions, self doubts, hatred .. "It's all in your head man!" ... to love one another .. the charge of most all religions ... a phenomenon when it seemed to be actually happening ... and on that personal level ... the rose in the fisted glove ... protected from the thorns ... going to the edge and sadly turning around and going back ... back woulda coulda shoulda ...what a wonderful life tho as the opportunity to leap re-occurs many times says i ... and leaping ... the flight down ... even if we are not caught but crash so foolishly (in retrospect) on the rocks below ... what a flight ... worth the pain .. every scratch and broken bone heals if we choose to be .. love your poem and the pick is perfect .. a reminisce for all the senior lovers in the world :)))))))))))))))))))))

And what we didn't know we faked... That could so be the title of our youth. All knowing, free and bursting to be grown up before our time, when youth is taken for granted and we all wait for that grown up feeling to synch with all those internal thoughts and worries, fears and hopes that one day it will all make sense.
I'm still waiting for that proper growed up feeling to announce itself to me (I think my name was missed on the list)
I'll just go out to play in the puddles until maturity catches up with me 😊

Finely put, Lydi- as your poetry always is. Yet, in spite of your final words - following the warm emotions - you still remember how to express your trembling doubts. Perhaps those are the times most recalled - even if not best remembered?

' salt water licking our toes - temptation nibbling on our psyches - smoke rings filling the sea air - i felt the beat of the music - and then you... Such brief yet visual wording.

I have been shot by love, I had a summer of roses in 1967...no bullets, just love.

Should have stayed there. Because the other roses had it out for me...
Excellent metaphor....back then we could be so naïve and we thought our hearts were invincible.
