the quarantine blues

the quarantine blues

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

a little fun ditty because, well, what else can i do? :)

"

i'm singing the blues
from this quarantine
the streets are all empty
it's a surrealistic scene!
my closet is organized
my dresser is too
i've read three books
what else is there to do?
the books on my shelf
are now alphabetical
the end date of this solitude
is just hypothetical!
i've made a fruit salad
and baked a chocolate cake
if this were a movie
we'd need a re-take!
my hair's a mess
my nails are painted quarantine
i'll not need a costume
if this lasts through halloween!
hands are raw
from sanitizer and soap
toilet paper is in short supply
all we can do is hope!
we're all in this together
that's true enough
now's the time to prove
we can be pretty tough.

You know the old saying Lydi**, laughter is the best medicine, and my goodness we need a good dose of that now don't we? Our lockdown started today, but we have been practising for best part of a week in our household. It will be hard not seeing some of the family, but at least we have technology which will keep us in touch. Routine, getting in to a set one is essential and finding things to do to replace all the social activities. Yes, I will be clearing out cupboards, gardening and finding a few new hobbies. Thank you for a lighthearted write about something we are all in together. Take care my friend.

Thank you, Julie....you too! Lydi**
This made me laugh. I was talking to an elderly man earlier this week, and he is part of the WWII generation. He and his few remaining friends are laughing about this. They went to work and war during a very long struggle, and I think most were happy to just have some bread and something to put between two slices.

Today, we complain about Starbucks closing, the Dollar General selling out of toilet paper, and the beaches closing. I think this might be a good wake-up call for the younger generations, and maybe a reminder for the rest of us that life in the USA is still pretty good.

Best wishes on staying healthy and sane during this period, Lydia. I always enjoy your work. And, now you have more time to write.

When the bars are shut you just know anarchy is around the corner.
Mind you, you're not allowed around the corner, which is maybe just as well.
We'll get through it like we always do. Might do the planet some good getting a break.

I am still working and I hope I can. No-one is working. The children are struggling. No-one had seen the world fall down in a 100 years. Always a pleasure to read your words and thoughts dear friend.
