a magic

a magic

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by sergey lutsenko
summer had shaken fists full of salt air at us
since school let out
every night the sun sort of slid under the horizon
like an egg sliding off a plate
except there was no mess
there was only our own brand of perfection
spiced with a bit of confusion
and let's face it
there was a splendiferous harmony to it
or so it seemed
maybe it was all a pyramid scheme of emotion

yet after more sunrises and sunsets
than i can even count
there's still something there
something that isn't a remnant of anything really
just something pretty damn close to perfection
and totally new
yes, a magic that lives in the summer sun

i really like the "egg sliding off a plate" idea...back then we did have our own brand of perfection and lots of confusion...
as we age the sunsets take on different meanings...more meaning...and we realize the perfection that for so long we never did notice.

Perhaps its the clarity or sunfilled reflection of light that makes youth see and store such wonderful memories. And of course, life and how it hits sight, mind and heart is so new, so glorious when young. The opposite of seeing and feeling snow for the first time, perhaps!

Your phrasing is always so picturesque - metaphorical if you prefer, it's like being given a slice of cake with the thickest icing - delicious. Or being reminded time and time eternal that beauty is there to be noted, remembered and more - to bring joy season after season. You've expressed that so beautifully. Thank you, Lydi.

Your chosen artwork always selected with such care Lydi** and done so to complement your writing. I appreciate that. When I reflect on my teenage years, perfection doesn't come to mind. Confusion does. The days which were almost perfect came a decade or so later. I think it is lovely that you can reflect on those times and do so with a sense of satisfaction and contentment. The summer sun can do that for you. Yes, it can be magical. Lovely poem dear Lydi**.
