a magic

a magic

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by sergey lutsenko
summer had shaken fists full of salt air at us
since school let out
every night the sun sort of slid under the horizon
like an egg sliding off a plate
except there was no mess
there was only our own brand of perfection
spiced with a bit of confusion
and let's face it
there was a splendiferous harmony to it
or so it seemed
maybe it was all a pyramid scheme of emotion

yet after more sunrises and sunsets
than i can even count
there's still something there
something that isn't a remnant of anything really
just something pretty damn close to perfection
and totally new
yes, a magic that lives in the summer sun

i really like the "egg sliding off a plate" idea...back then we did have our own brand of perfection and lots of confusion...
as we age the sunsets take on different meanings...more meaning...and we realize the perfection that for so long we never did notice.

Ahhh!
That we could package-up all our romantic memories, label them and open as moments of need and passion arise … that would be a magic of sorts, but not nearly as creatively lovely and expressed as you have by virtue of this captivating Free Verse piece, so beautifully rendered for our own pleasures.
With a sprinkle of whimsy, satire, mystical sentimentality, sweet emotion, and imagination, all blended into the warmth of Sun's enthrallingly sensational tingle.
Love your poetic-license in splendiferous, the fun humor of no mess of an egg sliding off a plate, and the kind of perfect imagery and emotion only the youth of Summer could construe.

Metaphorically brilliant, Lydi, as-well-as, appealing to my yesteryear's days of magic in the sun … thank you ever-so happily! ⁓ Richard 🍃

There hasn't been very much sun this year in the Midwest Lydia. Just rain, flooded crops, flooded basements and misery. But the sun, when it does come out, has a way of giving off this eternal hope that things are healing. Crops are drying out. Wet furniture is placed on the curb and misery is only temporary. "A magic", instead of just "magic" forces all the objects in this poem to one side of the room. It makes the medicine of this poem a singular, personal antidote to a grander, although personified, more rhetorical thing. (an apostrophe). Just wonderful.
I know you love to write love poetry, because this one perpetuates such sacraments in a sly kind of way...beautiful/ dana

When we're young, summer holds a kind of magic for us. It's a two month hiatus from school, and unlimited access to the beach. Living here in California, it becomes a second nature having your toes in the sand, but there's such a majestic view in the extraordinary hues of a sunset. It's quite the rush - splendiferous, at best. Your imagery is always picture perfect - therein lies the magic!

" ... just something pretty damn close to perfection and totally new.". I like that line so much. For me it has always been fall that makes me feel this way. Very "visual" poem that I really enjoyed. ~Jim

what a lovely word splendiferous:) I feel from these lines a freshness in the sublime we miss all to often. a comparison to the freshness of youth looking at everything in a wonderment of first experiences and then returning to it again in maturity as we look upon the graces in a new light of appreciation all over again. Did that make sense? well that's what the bunny felt from these lines:)

This is EXACTLY the nostalgia that comes over me at the start of summer! I'm transported back to my youth, growing up by the lake, all the nonsense & vanity & flirtations among outdoor adventures. You captured the sensations that I float away on perfectly! The opening line is the best word crafting I've read in weeks. Your sizzling "s" alliteration carries on like a jet contrail across the sky. Your poem launches my mood into orbit (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

It seems the sunsets are wider and encompass more colors than ever
before... shades of lavender and layers of persimmon sprinkled with
sugar and cinnamon. A large orange pumpkin slipping into a world of
different time zones when morning sun will rise like lemon meringue pie
in the sky. It rained all night with thunderstorms and morning skies were
laced with grey clouds... then by afternoon the sun was beating down on
sands of time where teenagers chase waves upon the shore of dreams.
Your poetry leaves footprints in my heart of memories. truly, Pat
