A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by steve henderson

what is as fascinating as yearning?
perhaps you are now warmed by the fire started inside
entwined in silken scarves of metaphoric mastery
our tongues will dance
turning first cheeks, then chest
cotton candy pink
but that amorous heat will cool
my welcoming arms will be but a memory
of a half forgotten tale
just as the summer sun fades when autumn leaves fall
another will capture your thoughts
because truly, my love
what is as captivating as desire?

summer may fade into autumn, and autumn fade into winter, but your pen yearns for creativity and a desire to write poetry, in the same way as I yearn to see one of your poems and desire to devour the words you place on the page and always so very 'nice'... just as winter desires to be spring.... oh, and no metaphors were harmed in this yearning desire... ;0)

it really is a wonderfully "nice" poem Lydi... glad you shared it...

Cassie, thanks so much for finding this one from a year ago! Lydi***
No desire, no candy.
I want you for the night, but close the door behind you in the morning when you leave.
For today is another to play, and who knows, you may captivate my desire.

Quite the comments, Paul! :) Thanks for the visit. Lydi**
brilliant Lydia! i think you are simply masterful ..the way your poem pulls me in at the start ... inspiring my own memories and feelings of yearning and in the very next line turn up the heat .,.love it ma'am .. and the turn with cooling ... capped by the irony of being replaced by desire ... just brilliant says i! and most of all... your speaker holds no bitterness that i sense ... well done .. top notch poetry of love and loving

Your poem reminds me of summers growing up at the lake where there was a new attraction each summer, but at summer's end, melancholy sets in, as everyone goes home for the season. You nail my main addiction: how captivating is desire? It was all about the longing . . . it would be someone new the next summer, but the longing was the same! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Ah, mystery solved!
Yes . . . yearning. Have you noticed how yearning changes as we get older? I believe I will post a poem that speaks to this idea in your poem.

By the way, Lydia, this sounds like Edna St. Vincent Millay.

A sensational poem, of the fires of desires and when they fade perhaps. Awesomely expressed and breezy. Kudos.

As ever always you touch parts of the mind that other writers cannot, Lydi and with great subtlety and finesse. Somehow you juggle phrases til they fall into your safe hands and make readers - certainly myself, to sigh at your skill. Tis more than skin deep - it comes from your heart.. ..
