time

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

time is beautiful
that's what i used to believe
when my world was young
and equations were solved
with the ease of youth
the future was sewn up with beautiful embroidery
bright stitches creating such a rosy display
words stood guard at the doors of my soul
sweet words i felt certain would never sour
but now time is a weapon
the future has started to ravel at the edges
fading a bit more with each passing year
and those words have lost not only their sweetness
but their ability to shield me
equations refuse to add up
so no matter how hard i try
to gaze through rose-colored glasses
time is bordering on ghastly

When a friend becomes the enemy. I was thinking that just today, as I rambled along a hiking path, looking on jealously at the hills and munros I used to run up without a thought.
I told some tourists who had descended, that I was jealous of how easy they made it look and they burst out laughing. They had been saying the same thing of me on their descent, sitting on a bench with a flask, just enjoying the scene.
I guess we can all feel a little jealous at times, but would I want to change places with them? Absolutely :)
A wonderful and thpught filled wrote to start the year in style Lydi.

It is interesting the antitheses these stanzas are. So much truth, but it all comes down to how we view life. An optimistic attitude is what is needed! Thank you for sharing!

You are so right. Thanks for the review. Lydi**
Lydi, it is said that 'young people talk of the future because they have no past, while old people talk of the past because they have no future.'
I like to think that the young have not had enough experiences, good or bad, to develop their character,
while we have nothing but character from all those years of ups and downs.
I like the introspection here.
We need to look back now and then to understand what made us who we are.
Thank the Lord we are writers...good or bad...we can draw from life.
Take whatever Time we have and run with it. But, please don't run with scissors.
Happy New Year

Powerful and worthwhile words shared dear Lydia.

The words above. A realistic view on how we can see our lives. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

Thank you, John. May it be a year of writing and reading poetry!
This is one of the more straightforward & powerful things I've read by you! I love it! I can see how this POV would be very relatable, since most think of advancing age as things changing for the worse. I am having the opposite experience in my old age, after a lifetime of being crippled by my issues, & now becoming free despite being physically crippled! Anyhow, time is a double-edged sword we can all agree! I love how your poem inspired some great responses (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Beautiful words Lydi**. A first class write. Conveys what many of us feel in our latter years. There's nothing that focuses the mind so much as that hour glass, with its sand ever speeding through. "but now time is a weapon", oh yes it is indeed.

I can relate to your words Lydi, so much so over the past year. Time is flying by way to quickly..and yes, those rose colored glasses can get a bit misty. The perfect poem for a new year. :) Julie

The world doesn’t change. We change. Time changes us. The colours lose their vividness, the seasons, their charm and the music of life, it’s tinkle. This poem is so beautiful and so complete in expression. Exquisitly penned as always, dear Lydi. A great start to the New Year!

Very beautiful poem! Time is important, but it can be a person's worst enemy too.

There will be many phases of the Moon in Hanuary 2019... the embroidery may be in shades of discovery... your poetry reflects the image of not knowing where common sense has flown... since some of our leaders seem to forget that they represent what we the people want in order to protect our Country and our borders. Bravo for being a bright Star in the Theatre of our world. truly, Pat
