baggage

baggage

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

yea, i come with a lot of baggage

and there is a large surcharge for every checked bag

used to be able to dig into my bag of tricks

to pay the fee

but lately it seems

i am left stranded on the wrong side of the bed

with hope just out of reach

and pockets bulging with the static of ennui

still, tonight there is a droning hum tickling my ear

the catacombs of my soul vibrate to the rhythm

i kinda sorta remember who i used to be

familiar incantations soothe me

i unpack that baggage and smile

Any poet who can include, '.. i kinda sorta remember' in the same breath as, ' .. bulging with the static of ennui.. ' wins my vote!

Plus, the accompanying picture highlights the charming honesty of those and other words, start to finish. You smile so beautifully - me too, having read the above twice!

What would we be without baggage. The young seem to think that all that 'baggage' is a burden the old carry around and drag out every now and then to bore the snot out of them. We all carry baggage. It's how we carry it that matters. Good write, Lydi.

Yes! Love the metaphor use. Baggage is what we've earned (the hard way!), and it makes us what we are. The Pandora's box we carry- filled with skeletons and treasures. Ours! Love this poem!

Thanks so much, Annette. Lydi**
This reminds me of my first date with my Now wife,
I did my best to talk her out of loving me by unloading my whole wardrobe of years of baggage she would have to get through if she unwisely chose to be with me,
To her credit, she was up for the challenge.

Love your poetry, it always speaks to me in such a down to earth realness.

The enchantment of casting a spell... knowing
beauty never fails... only the boredom where
love once knew the secrets of my soul for whom the bell tolls. truly, Pat

"And pockets bulging with the static of ennui," I liked this line most of all.

People come with baggage, but baggage comes with wisdom. There's wisdom here, but I don't think I have enough baggage yet to see it clearly.

Smiling here....at my age, I have the wisdom inside the baggage! :) Thanks so much. Lydi**
To have no baggage is suspect lol We all have some baggage, it shaped us and molded us into who we have become, as always Lydi, a delightful poem and gave me a smile :)

Yes, we all have baggage...We wouldn't be who we are without it. I'm glad yours left you with a smile. Julie

We have to smile...it is life. Thanks, Julie. Lydi**
Love! Love! Love! This one really sings to me. I hate that expectation of not having any baggage, or if we do, we should be able to submerge it to the point where it doesn't impact anyone. Your poem makes me dream of the kind of friend who accepts everything & doesn't categorize some of my best quirks as "baggage"!! I like the way the narrator OWNS her stuff! *smile*
