A Poem by Lydia Shutter

64

the song played on the record player

it was on the sgt. pepper album

turning on the stereo

i remember it so well

because, well, it was yesterday, wasn’t it?

we danced in the basement of your house

colorful beads hung from the doorway

i can still hear the way they jingled

when someone walked into the room

catching us in a “too close for teenagers” embrace

we laughed at the lyrics

64?

hell, that was eons away

but the stereo is an antique now

and i  kinda sorta am too

if i dance the night away

my body rebels for days

i used to live the love poems i wrote

really!

the waves kissed my toes while you kissed my lips

the man on the moon smiled down on me

even winked when no one else was looking

where did these deeply etched lines come from?

when did an exciting evening

turn into answering the final jeopardy question?

calendar pages have played a dirty trick on me

so now i must ask you

“will you still need me, will you still feed me”

yea, i’m 64!

ummmm... I loved that music and in a way i was singing it two years ago... and suddenly I thought to myself: Uau! I got to 64 and i don't need no one to feed me! Isn't it a victory?!!! And also to be free to be myself as i like it because, in reality no one "needs" me!!!
Lovely poem!

Happiest of birthdays to one the most splendiferous poets ever. No telling how many of my Friday Nights have been brightened by your amazing poetry. Always a fan, and , yes, definitely still need you. ~Jim

Laughing here. Thanks, Paul. Lydi**
A feisty ending to a sensitive exploration of passing time and aging Lydi. The years simply slip into the past and grow and grow until memories are all we have. But we are still the same child/teenager/young adult at heart.

Indeed, and rightly so Lydi!
dear Lydi... When I was a teen, my friend had a Beatles party. I remember "I wanna hold your hand". There were moves that I cannot do now. Happy 64

Oh, I know that for sure, Pat.
"when did an exciting evening
turn into answering the final jeopardy question?"

Love, love, love that line! I was once told, and have since remembered, that age is a matter of mind - if you don't mind, it doesn't matter!

Here's to many more, Lydi!

This is so true, my friend....I have it on a Tshirt! Thank you very much. Lydi**
Dear, dear you, please stick to letters.. never, never mention numbers ever again. Because, when it comes to you.. they don't mean a fig!

As to the 'letter's in your fine, fine poem. - you've yet again brought memories of time, scenes, emotions, people, music and more to make my heart smile. You have a way..THE way.. Brava!

64 is the new 34 in poets time Lydia. There is no real space between events, pitches between tones or
love affairs that thrust themselves against one another. In that realm of marriage or divorce,
going bald or getting fat, having kids or adopting,
getting a rescued dog or finding a cat under the engine of your car, preparing Easter dinner or going to the nearest beach.....life get's lost in age just like time get's lost in traveling. What i'm saying Lydia is that Frost, Whitman, Plath, Sexton, Wordsworth, Ginsberg, HD and Baraka are all still alive. Because in theory, words never age......I love this poem....dana
