A Poem by Lydia Shutter

64

the song played on the record player

it was on the sgt. pepper album

turning on the stereo

i remember it so well

because, well, it was yesterday, wasn’t it?

we danced in the basement of your house

colorful beads hung from the doorway

i can still hear the way they jingled

when someone walked into the room

catching us in a “too close for teenagers” embrace

we laughed at the lyrics

64?

hell, that was eons away

but the stereo is an antique now

and i  kinda sorta am too

if i dance the night away

my body rebels for days

i used to live the love poems i wrote

really!

the waves kissed my toes while you kissed my lips

the man on the moon smiled down on me

even winked when no one else was looking

where did these deeply etched lines come from?

when did an exciting evening

turn into answering the final jeopardy question?

calendar pages have played a dirty trick on me

so now i must ask you

“will you still need me, will you still feed me”

yea, i’m 64!

ummmm... I loved that music and in a way i was singing it two years ago... and suddenly I thought to myself: Uau! I got to 64 and i don't need no one to feed me! Isn't it a victory?!!! And also to be free to be myself as i like it because, in reality no one "needs" me!!!
Lovely poem!

Happy birthday! As you age gracefully, you continue gracing us with ageless poems. Enjoy your day with laughter and music. Notes speak louder than numbers.

And four years later... I still read your poem
with a smile ... remembering the Beatles and
their songs. Yesterday, there was bright sunshine and
then it became almost dark with thunder and lightening
and it rained a lot. Suddenly it stopped and in a "Clap"
of Thunder the Sun came out Bright as bright can be.
The Month of April is Carefree and sweet as Honey Bees.

But we are here...and that is what matters!
I had to laugh as the song came to mind, and damned if I didn't start singing it.
Never thought I would be pushing 64 but it is right down the street and around the corner.

Loved this

Music is the traceline of memory. A certain lyric, a chord echoing down through the decades can transport us back to any time and any place we have ever inhabited.

From childhood to the gold of a final sunset, music and memory are inextricably entwined; and I for one an so glad that our species has been able to create in such a wonderful way.

A truly lovely poem.

Beccy.
