that place

that place

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

have i mentioned lately how much i dislike december?

"

will you drive me back to that place?

that place where i was sure

who i was and what was important

the very spot where i became me

where the tongue of night licked stars from my lips

and stress was kept prisoner in a far off realm

oh yes!

i was positive it would never escape

yet it writhed out from its captivity

cutting through the barbed wire of life

bringing with it uncertainty

and a chill felt ten miles north of no where

now i am stuck sharing a park bench with it

so do me a huge favor, will you?

let me hitch a ride back to that other place

This makes me think of that time between adolescents and adulthood; not a child, but not a grown up. I was certain of who I was, I had no worries what-so-ever (chose to ignore all responsibility) and I was happy because I didn't think of anyone but myself... when adulthood came (many years later than it should have actually), I had to re-examine the person I thought I was, or maybe the person I wanted others to see....? I had to accept responsibility for myself and my life, and the stress that comes with that. Once in a while I would like to go back to being innocent and free, but then I realize that I was just stupid, and that was my cage. I wasn't free at all... this piece definitely makes me think about a lot.

that place where i was sure

I like the battlefield flavor as though mortar fire and artillery are shelling your soul.

The Tongue of night.......great line!

Lydia,
"That Place" reminded me of the inner resistance of happy and sad- dark and light; the desire to be at peace but struggling instead. Introspective rooms are good to visit sometimes your poem was my chance...............Bless you and your wisdom...............Kathy

You? Seeing something metaphorically? No way! :) Thank you for the review, Jacob. Lydi**
I hate December too. I'd like to go back to a place that was 'before' ... So relatable Lydi. Not what I'm used to reading from you but so good.

This time of year brings out the melancholy in me. Thanks, Ana. Merry Christmas to you. Lydi**
dear Lydi... The mid-north is having a blizzard warning this weekend.
I am chilly even though the sun comes out most every day in Virginia. Your poetry is refreshing as
roses under the snow. truly, Pat

such an enchanting melancholy look back for that special glow .. this line for me is absolutely stunning:
"where the tongue of night licked stars from my lips"
if the entire rest of the poem were in Greek (which i do not speak nor understand) it would not matter ... but your story overall is captivating and sweeps me along .. the pic is perfect! i like the whole ball game ..home run for me ..glad you shared this one

I really love this message & the way you've word-crafted it! I also hate December (and many others, since I'm seeing this type of message a lot now!) Your expressions are very dynamic ("it writhed out from its captivity") . . . and I also love the overall idea of wanting to return to a time & place when life was ALL THAT & MORE! Good job of leaving us with a haunting longing . . .
