that place

that place

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

have i mentioned lately how much i dislike december?

"

will you drive me back to that place?

that place where i was sure

who i was and what was important

the very spot where i became me

where the tongue of night licked stars from my lips

and stress was kept prisoner in a far off realm

oh yes!

i was positive it would never escape

yet it writhed out from its captivity

cutting through the barbed wire of life

bringing with it uncertainty

and a chill felt ten miles north of no where

now i am stuck sharing a park bench with it

so do me a huge favor, will you?

let me hitch a ride back to that other place

This makes me think of that time between adolescents and adulthood; not a child, but not a grown up. I was certain of who I was, I had no worries what-so-ever (chose to ignore all responsibility) and I was happy because I didn't think of anyone but myself... when adulthood came (many years later than it should have actually), I had to re-examine the person I thought I was, or maybe the person I wanted others to see....? I had to accept responsibility for myself and my life, and the stress that comes with that. Once in a while I would like to go back to being innocent and free, but then I realize that I was just stupid, and that was my cage. I wasn't free at all... this piece definitely makes me think about a lot.

I am fairly certain that I HATE December more than you Lydi! For that matter, October, November, January and February too! but only for the weather and not for any emotional reasons. We all have 'places' we would like to travel back to and you capture this, the place where we are confident and certain in our life and love.

:) I am sure you are not enamored with the weather in December. If I lived up north, I would feel .. read more
I need to get January out of the way. It's the sort of dead month that drags on. Mind you, winter in general does my head in now. Roll on summer.

For me I would have to go back years to my youth when my dad could fix everything for me. At least I thought so. Valentine

I appreciate your review, Josie. Thanks so much. Lydi**
I understand these feelings so very much. At least, how I interpret it is my similar dread I feel towards summer, even though I love the warmth it brings. It is the memories, the tough things, that we sometimes associate with a particular time of year, that make us want to just get it over with -- or go back.

You understood 100% of what I was saying. For you it is the summer, for me December.....it stinks. .. read more
It is interesting to see that you have used the words that place which makes the readers to look for geography in first place.. But the twist you gave is surprising and very unique..
What a unique way to show your dislike. The second section bringing the livid picture is awesome..
Thank you for sharing...

I can relate this to time, too. When you say that "place", it could be the situation that you love the most...when you are the real you and you are contented with life. But time passes by, and we cannot hold it back and the life we really want.

I like this poem so much. Great writing!
