rolling beads

rolling beads

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

i’ve tried to restring my necklace of memories

carefully leaving the beads of you on the table

(a disowning of sorts I suppose)

but there they are again

like time and eternity holding evil hands

walking into the sunset

(or into the ocean to drown)

instead of sweet silence, i hear dutch melodies

an off key dissonance thrumming through my psyche

you know, i thought you left me with nothing

but you actually left me these memories

an ongoing inheritance

so on this balmy september morn

here i am again collecting rolling beads

September seems to bring a wave of releasing and realising, a gathering of memories and a shaping of us, so I call it :) Those beads will always roll but life has a habit of directing them where they need to be and we piece them together slowly, over time, with new insight and balance, lovely Lydi :)

This had me smiling. Why is it we forget things we wish to remember and remember those we want to
forget?

The Murphy's law of the soul I suppose. Thanks, Kathie. Lydi**
September is indeed the saddest month, and the beads left on the table are no doubt the shiniest. I can so relate to this.

Thank you for your review, Lisa. Lydia
I love this. This is one of my favorites of yours that I've read so far. First, I love the imagery of beads & how you used it thru-out. I've done much beading in my life, so I get the intense fondness for varying colors & textures, trying things on for size, etc. Also, I love the way you've written this as a sweet melody of acceptance, with a few parenthetical barbs which really make a person laugh & also reel with the memory of something similar. This is true brilliance.

Inventive imagery here. Memories keep coming back, with their (sometimes) off-key melodies. We can't expunge them - they are a part of us, whether we like it or not. A poem almost every reader will be able to identify with, Lydie! Excellent write.

Thanks so much, Robert. Lydi**
(((((LYDI)))), I know there are times in the year when these "beads" unravel and scatter so we pick them up, feel their smooth or jagged essence, remind us of where we have come from, and who we've become because of them, because this inheritance is far more precious, even if bitter sweet, than anything we may have... beads like pictures, bring floods of memories as well as tears and also smiles of "remember whens"... this poem is one of your best Lydi, its one that unlocks our hearts to feel with you the shape of these beads (Dutch melodies), the loss (into the ocean to drown) and then sends us on our way better for having read and experienced your heart and memories and smooth "beads"...

it's more than "nice" Lydi and I will read and read seeing these beads everywhere...

You are a very good friend, Curt....you read me so clearly. Thank you very much. Lydi**
I love the beautiful analogy you have drawn -Rolling Beads and the surpassing myriad of memories! Particularly the line- "carefully leaving the beads of you on the table". Beautiful manoeuvre!
Right from the first verse itself it sort of hooked onto my senses. Your poetry reflects the power of memories and their potential to make or break us. Excellent write-up :)

dear Lydi, a precious poem of memories...
haunting Dutch melodies... Enchantment
with the comfort of rolling beads...
re-stringing each memory...
truly mesmerized. Pat

The image and words fit into a discordant array of structure, eye and heart feel the pain as self relives a jagged edge of life.

Al
