The Promise of Perhaps

The Promise of Perhaps

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

romantic fantasy

"

Artwork by Julia Pappas

A big ewer basks in the sun just over the hill

embracing eternity’s minutes

each morning it tips ever so carefully

pouring out precisely one thousand four hundred forty

specially selected segments of time

Memorable though each one may be

I drink in only the ones designed to sate my longing

          for your touch

                   your voice

                              your words

licking each drop from my lips

the promise of perhaps inflames my desire

Yes, my darling, I still wait for

that one succulent second

the one destined

to carry me back to your arms

You are welcome dear Lydia.
I absolutely LOVE the opening image of a "ewer" (had to look that one up -- great to learn new words!) . . . perfect vessel for holding those 1440 seconds . . . your entrance is so thoughtfully detailed, I was in a state of wonder, waiting to see what new delight would be presented in your poem! Then we go along thru the graceful observations til we get to "the promise of perhaps" which is my very favorite of all sensual devices . . . just love that lingering longing without certainty of being fulfilled. It can be almost as fun as coming together with wild abandon. I love the way you tease this one out to a point of imagined fulfillment *smile*

This is a beautifully soft and sensual light that illuminates the mind and heart with wonder. There is endless desire in the longing of perhaps.

There is always something about 'perhaps', an inexhaustible fuel to hope flickering against winds of despair. I like the beginning lines, "...precisely one thousand four hundred forty specially selected segments of time."
Good to read your words.

OMG, your words with such wonderful, provocative expressions have me panting......LOL This is definitely a "YOWZA" write that should awaken longings in any who reads it with 1/2 a libido, or less! And the image of the girl with her lips parted as if asking, "Where are you?" brings it all together. You are absolutely beyond my ability to define gifted in the art of seductive writing! Now, where is that man you long for??? He certainly is alive in your memory, in the realm of your romantic fantasy

:) thank you....yes, you have written plenty steamy ones too.
The intensity of love, the depth of longing and the hope of meeting are so evident in this beautifully crafted poem. You are so right, Lydi. We live just for those moments and the rest of time becomes meaningless.
A poem par excellence.
