A Poem by Lydia Shutter

the last scraps of day
slip beneath the horizon
this used to mean it was time

time to take advantage of endless options
while the neon signs blinked out
morse code missives
to every passerby
and i searched the skies for my lucky star
hoping she would silently help me
decipher the message
that would make all my wishes come true
                no cover no minimum

the background music was provided
by the rolling stones
and my knees still were happy to dance
consequences did not deter me

but tonight as the sunset melody begins to play
i wonder if time was ever on my side at all
and while i’m sure it holds the secret to life
that lucky star and i never quite deciphered the message

I think you really captured something of the human condition here.
A message.
Meant for us.
A miracle, that blinks in morse code-

While driving through lights- we say-if it turns green or red- that will be my answer.
Why do we do this.. I don't know.
But it is all of us.

This sign blinking in your poem is much darker and harder-
but you've touched something so true-

I like how it switches from a man mad light to a divine one.
So much here- thank you for sharing.

Starring up at the stars, seeking just enough light to go on as the Stones sing, "Paint it Black" in the background. What was the message of those days, did the meaning disappear after the final last call, or did it follow you into the future? I think the message has walked with you all along. I believe I hear "Time is on my side" in the background now. At least it's not "19th Nervous Breakdown" :) Loved this, it brought a few memories back.

:) You remember the Stones too. Thanks for the review. Lydi**
Hi Lydia. I love how poets invoke such wonderful memories with their words. My father was at uni in the sixties, the Stones were his favourite, (he once told me it was more trendy as a student to like the Stones rather than the Beatles.)

I'm seeing my parents at the weekend, I'll show this to dad and I just know he'll love the line;

'and my knees still were happy to dance.'

Beccy.

It was time... and those were the times. The boardwalks, the bars, the local bands, no cover, no minimum and after...watching the rest of the night fade away on the beach with arms around that special person. Thanks for the memories Lydi.

I love this poem. I can relate of the wishing of the stars/signs of what is to come. I still get that way periodically. Great write I totally enjoyed it.

Thank you so much, Eileen. Lydi*
I really like the wording of the second Stanza, It leaves me with a lot to look into. You switch really well from the abstract into almost painting a picture with your words. I really like your word choices in some places: Morse code missives, Slip beneath, Silently help, Sunset melody. The end of the second stanza is a bit confusing, I'm not sure if that is the message or not, or perhaps a section of it.

Really hope this feedback is helpful or enjoyable to you in some way.
