stay a while

stay a while

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by marie laurencin

i ponder
how improbable
the dimensions of your hug are

how is it possible?
your arms are the shortest distance
between love and caring
yet are long enough to span my world
encompassing me in a way
nothing before ever has
and surely nothing ever will in the future

indeed, your hug is a country
yes that is what it is
a universe i reach without a compass
yet t'is there I am quite lost
in a glorious way

as the ebony velvet of night
takes off its slippers
i smile
knowing it is here
i wish to stay a while

When held in the arms of one who you care for and you can feel these same feeling returned, without words, without facial expressios, just knowing that this is a place that you are truly wanted and where you want to be, it can be its own country or universe. For once in that loving embrace nothing else exists except that moment which you hope lasts an enternity. Very beautiful Lydi.

Lydia, this is why as you mentioned on my page that you have been published. Phrases like the night taking off its slippers, your hug is a country - your arms are the shortest distance between love and caring this is real poetry. I had at more than one point over a 1000 RRs and none were from you. I seek you out when I can because your writing is fluid and beautiful. You've put in your time and deserve respect and you always have mine.
take care

"Indeed your hug is a country", put a smile on my face. Such a beautiful expression of emotion, and gratitude for the comfort of love. Gorgeous!

This was such an enjoyable read. The subject you have taken and poured your emotions is truly wonderful. This is the first time I am reading a poem of yours that has been split in verses, might be other treasures like this one. I will have to do some digging for that. ^^ I really loved this, as usual your write affects all senses. A hug can truly be magical.I can clearly sense the personal touch this poem has and it is indeed beautiful. ^^Thank you for sharing. ^^

The comfort of being close and even held by those we love is hard to define. Here, you give the reader a sense of longing and satisfaction blended like cream in coffee. I want to linger here and simmer in this emotion.

' .. a universe i reach without a compass - yet t'is there I am quite lost ..' Beautiful.

This, dear Lydi, has the silky smoothness of shared love and the knowledge that within it both passion and comfort is the absolute destination.

It's hard to imagine a more inviting place to be than the contentment found within your words; the hug which is a country, arms that are the shortest distance between love and caring, and then the night time description of ebony velvet as it removes its garments of day to welcome one into a place that has to be exactly the right place! Inviting, loving, romantic..........ah, so divine! (And the sweet expression on the face of the girl just gives it all away-she just has to be wearing velvet slippers to match the night to match her velvet collar and hat!)

A very heart warming poem
It is within this embrace that all troubles melt into nothing
A truly romantic piece filled with presence of another
