I Am Still Your Child

I Am Still Your Child

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

I am still your child

I cry when I realize I can’t call you

can’t ask you for advice

or make you proud

I am still your child

but now I am the only one

who remembers the smiling faces

in those black and white photos

I am still your child

your spark of consciousness

in this physical world

I am still your child

but you left me with this emptiness

and it grows with each passing year

Because

I am still your child

I had to read this becuz the title beckons hauntingly. You've expressed these oft-felt sentiments creatively with the sorrowful refrain that's oh-so-true in more ways than the parent-child sense. This refrain is fitting, even when one or both parents haven't lived up to their intended potential.

Hold on to those great memories and hold on to the hope of reunification one day in Heaven. Separation is so hard physically but keep that connection in the spirit. A sad but touching write...:)............

I was crushed when I lost my mom, for she was my last surviving parent. I felt like an orphan for the longest time, and didn't quite know how else to feel. It certainly was a defining moment in my life.

But we are never without them in the truest sense, are we?

Such a lovely analogy, Lydi...thank you for warming my heart!

yes you are Lydi, as you always will be... your father's daughter and your mother's child and how much they loved you will be there always as well... now it is your turn to label those photos and pass them on to your son and grand daughter so they know your love and the love in your family as far back as you can reach... perhaps all were like the child in the photo, a small child on the beach... It is interesting how there is always a little girl or boy inside us all that just wants our parents to love them and be proud. The longing doesn't go away even with death, abuse, or time.

Oh my friend, I can't even imagine that feeling. I don't think there is a greater treasure in this world than our parents. and i think we are honored when we get a chance to serve them. you were, are, and always will be the most wonderful daughter, and i hope you will always find strength and comfort when you write about them. very touching poem. a little too much.

The emptiness you feel can be felt in your words, and that's all a writer can ask for. A really touching write.

Both my parents are still living but your very touching write reminds me that the day will soon come when I will be feeling the same way. I have been blessed to have them for this long but it is hard to imagine life without them. Hope you found a way to help fill that void even for a moment. Simply beautiful Lydi.

What a beautifully tender poem. Having two daughter's this really hit home for me. What more could a parent ask for than a child who loves them so. Absolutely wonderful Lydi. This is a sigh moment.
