I Am Still Your Child

I Am Still Your Child

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

I am still your child

I cry when I realize I can’t call you

can’t ask you for advice

or make you proud

I am still your child

but now I am the only one

who remembers the smiling faces

in those black and white photos

I am still your child

your spark of consciousness

in this physical world

I am still your child

but you left me with this emptiness

and it grows with each passing year

Because

I am still your child

I had to read this becuz the title beckons hauntingly. You've expressed these oft-felt sentiments creatively with the sorrowful refrain that's oh-so-true in more ways than the parent-child sense. This refrain is fitting, even when one or both parents haven't lived up to their intended potential.

You are so blessed to have the memories. For those, who've never known a parent, that emptiness lingers still. It's the salt in every tear, the thrum of every heartbeat. I don't think any child ever feels whole without her parents.

You have a kind heart, Linda. Thank you for the wonderful review. Lydi**
this is so damn touching, Lydi. I can only half relate as only my father has left us. but the void he left seems to grow with each passing year. you're right no matter how old we get, we'll always be their little children.
lovely write.

Ohh this is heart-wrenchingly beautiful!
The words are drenched in love, loss and longing.

Touches and tugs at the heart-strings of the reader. Hard.

Welcome friend :)
I still have both my parents (and most of my grandparents), but as I read this I could hear my mom speaking to her dad or my grandmother speaking to her mom. It reminded me that the people I see as parents or grandparents are still somebody's child. This poem is beautiful and sad and full of love.

" ... you left me with this emptiness and it grows with each passing year " . Wow. That alone would be a great poem. This is very touching and well-worded and a reminder to anyone who reads, this poet in particular, to be glad for the time you have with your parents (Mine are celebrating their wedding anniversary tomorrow). Consider yourself e-hugged by an old man in the desert. Excellent write. ~Jim
