When Truth Comes to Call

When Truth Comes to Call

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

the role of confidante is often a thankless one

"

artwork by Kirchner

Well dressed hours
shamelessly disrobed
revealing inner secrets
for many naked minutes
your loose tongue hung by its hinges
while I listened to words you dared not share with others
was there a true story behind your words?
hindsight tells me no

Warning sirens wailed
streets bulged with traffic
cars scooted from lane to lane
rushing to be my harbingers of authenticity
they knew what I refused to admit
well meaning confidantes are often deserted
when truth comes to call

I love your opening analogies, very clever & well-stated . . . a departure from the sensual, now I'm seeing how well you also address the somewhat harsh everyday observations of life. Awesome wording: "loose tongue hung by its hinges" . . . & many more! Thanks for sharing.

I too have heard the sirens and seen the red flags however still choose to be there for who ever needs me. I am constantly let down however remain true to myself and continue to be who I am. Do I set myself up to fail....many times. Loved the honesty in this piece Lydi:)

This poem is so honest! Confidantes should not be taken advantage of, but at the same time, everyone should be honest with each other. Lies are like a snowball. Fantastic write! :-D

Thank you very much, Kelsey Ann. Lydi**
ah, isn't this the truth... how many times do we place ourselves in 'harms' way, to be let down, even when we hear and see the warnings all around us? Too often, maybe. Still, those of us or are trustful and kind continue to put ourselves out there to be those confidantes... love the title and the image, too, Lydi...nicely-done, my friend!

'.. for many naked minutes - your loose tongue hung by its hinges - while I listened .. '

Seems to me that there are two kinds of sharers and darers and confidantes, those who give and.. those who somehow take for advantage. The sirens sound every so often but then.. one does the kind thing, shakes head, moves on til the next time.. and, finally, the last time.

Your words as always are so finely laid, Lydi, their meanings and style placed just so, yet naturally.. Your posts don't jar the sight but nudge thought. From start to finish you offer downright dexterity of mind and imagination, arm in arm.

And your reviews, sweet Emma, make my day. thank you so much. Lydi*
The truth will set you free... A confidant is a
treasure where honesty is measured. Your poem is
exquisitely designed. truly, Pat

this is so full of truth...those who seem to confide the biggest secrets, actually hide the biggest of all...that they are dishonest behind that mask of authenticity...

i often didn't listen to those warning sirens....maybe i heard too many of them in NY and just took them for granted.
