I Smile

I Smile

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by Victor Bauer

I smile
because I have lived it
danced to it
the narcotic rhythm of verse
lived in it and through it
submerged myself in a bubble bath
of steamy innuendo
flowers and caution
thrown to the winds of chance
reveled in that parallel universe
where contraband is confiscated
then hidden by butterflies
in the wild grass of thought

I smile
because I have known the quiet urgency
the unexplainable yearning
of stalking that perfect syllable
in a place where words rule
where peeling meaning off lines
of succulent verse
simply to devour its sweet sections
somehow makes more sense
than most any other pursuit

Reading this is like watching a dream come true. This is everything that a poet can't explain. all those heady concoction of emotions, that no one else will understand. I've always believed that all poets have this certain emptiness, that poetry alone can fill. You have described that mystical feeling and yearning perfectly. love that ending..at that point my smile just exploded! :D.

This is fabulous writing Lydi my dear! Love these lines...where contraband is confiscated then hidden by butterflies in the wild grass of thought. This paints a vivid and beautiful image in the mind of your fortunate readers! ~Sharon

damn, and you speak of my metaphors?

this is a true "poet's poem"

those innuendos fly like the wind and wind up on our pages somehow...and who needs explanations?

A wonderful in depth journey to the world of writing and self expression. You have worded it just beautifully and with such grace as only you can do. Love this one, Lydi.

Wow! Those five closing lines are such a knock out Lydi. This expresses our 'art' and it's aspirations in a beautiful verse with sensitivity and eloquence as is your style.
