a poem is born

a poem is born

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by Kendall Jan Jubb

it’s only the fragile infancy of an idea

yet its tendrils transfix me

like a punch of drama

my fingers catapult

then mysteriously slow

to a limber spider-like gait

simultaneously sharp and fluid

a tense battle of wits ensues

there’s a jagged trembling of syllables

a sort of crudité of vibrating gibberish

the elasticity of thought hypnotizes me

words are provocative

       seducing me

      finally

     a poem is born

I've read many a poem about the creative process; often they are quite similar sounding, this is rather special though.

The word choice, the way you build from the first gently whimsical line, 'the fragile infancy of an idea' to that almost explosive 'there’s a jagged trembling of syllables a sort of crudité of vibrating gibberish,' is absolutely wonderful.

Really enjoyed this.

An eloquent and intelligent description of the creative process accompanied by a most relevant picture of butterflies - poetry and butterflies both born from the cocoon's of creativity. Beautiful!

So satisfyingly, gratifying when it all comes together... Poetic creativity is a wonderful gift and you have it by the shed load Lydia as this delightfully worded poem vindicates so perfectly !

I love your work and you are welcome.
Ah, words are truly provocative and seducing to a writer. It's as if we never stop thinking because they have such control over us, but once written, they are something so beautiful ad worth remembering. Like those dreams we often forget or broken hearts we wish to mend. Writing is such a stunning process and every writer should experience such a thrill as you've described.

A wonderful description of the poetic process. Similar to some, but unique to each person.

An oh-so-lovely process virtually unknown to me.
Guess that's why you compose poetry and I write stuff.
Enlightening, Lydi--and not a little humbling,
Could not be more exquisitely expressed!

Don't put yourself down, Frankie...you write very well yourself! Thank you for your review. Lydi**
How many words are there that can make people actually smile when they read them?
And how many lines does it take to make one stop what they are reading and revel in the moment
That they have just consumed a tiny morsel of ingenious perfection.

You continue to blow my mind with your tasty treats of poetry.

Wow......
