The High Tide

The High Tide

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

a walk on the shoreline at sunset

"

art work “beach walk” by Amanda Russian

It is sunset

the flag of my former self

whips against the wind

the waterfront

drowsy on a full stomach of sand castles

invites me to crawl under a blanket of wet sand

day dreams transport me to another place

where the distorted light of memory

casts a rosy glow on my world

unnamed figures bob up and down in the waves

while my lips taste an all too familiar salty brine

a bird smirks as it flies by

telling me the joke’s on me

my laugh is lost in the high tide of life

From those words to your poem's end, you took me to a different time but meandered with feelings and memories that have near branded your heart and remain hidden until they gently reminded your of a shared past existence wrapped with everything colourful that made for smiles but somehow attracted negatives as if wanting to pull you under the waves. This is sad. A once upon a time that returns. Perhaps

This is a wonderful verse, conjuring lovely childlike images of sandy beaches and ocean waves. There is a bit of sadness at the end, feeling like the speaker is lost and overwhelmed with life.

You are a sweetie. thanks.
I love the melancholy feel to your words Lydi - just a hint of sadness in your reflection - but there is joy too

` sometimes it's those daydreams that make the day bearable...
I enjoyed your walk on the shore this afternoon!

You know it, Julie. The daydreams are what make us smile. Thank you. Lydi**
So beautifully written Lydia. It has that kind of whimsical, reflective tone that I find so appealing in a poem. 'My former self, 'the distorted light of memory,' are lines that could only be written from experience of life.

So very much enjoyed. Beccy.

Something about the tide, the ocean's pull at the emotions...Lydi, this is so very beautiful love, as beautifully visual as this is, it also left a sadness too...stunning hon xo

This has an whimsical but sadly reflective edge to it Lydi. It is painted in bold colours and brush strokes just like the picture that accompanies it.

Finally I am the first one here and I find a poem by one of my favorite poets and it is a bit sad and bittersweet. I did however love this, because in a way it sounds like me. :) I love the line "drowsy on a full stomach of sand castles". Honestly, I loved so many of the lines in this poem I would probably have to copy and paste the entire poem to highlight them all. Lydi, this sounds like a lonely beach but I am sure once you arrived, the sunset was even more beautiful.

Damn, Jacob beat me. I need to learn to type faster....

beautiful words...i picture something like Rye Beach back when i was a kid....

those waves still come today, same as so many years ago...many laughs have been lost in the high tide of life.

miss your poetry when it is not around, Lydi...
