then there was you

then there was you

circumstance and time change everything

hither and yon i roamed
a little bit lost
not really wanting to be found

then there was you
you told me i was a temptress
and from your lips
the illogical seemed somehow logical
nights did not start till i was in your arms
and the morning’s warm breath flowed
from your suggestive lips
daytime meant nothing
it was only a means to an end.....you

i actually believed
barry mcguire was singing “eve of destruction” about me
because i didn’t accept it
not even when you were 1A at the draft board
surely you would not have to go there
no, you would be here with me...together
but forever would not be ours
the rules of life just did not apply
you were gone so long
time wore on us
like a corrosive emulsion

still, the truth is
our star was bright for a little while
and i remember

A nice journey in your words. I like the one time temptress turning to a memory. I like the about lines a lot. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

Again, a beautiful poem, accepting the good and the bad of the past with grace and understanding.

I truly appreciate you catching up like this. Lydi**
A soldiers life and wife, how hard that must be on both, you think your love can withstand anything, even the test of time, oft times not but there is always that little piece that you carry of them inside you. Beautiful writing Lydi, sad and yet gorgeous at the same time, a perfect balance.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I appreciate it. Lydi**
You had me at that first line Lydikey, in times of struggle we cling to our safe harbor, one that gives us sanctuary, alas it doesn't always last...an enthralling read!

the illogical seemed somehow logical

Sigh if that could only last forever and ever...

Yes, if only.....but it seems some things are not meant to be. Thanks for the review, Frieda. Lydi.. read more
It is unfortunate that life and love can be so wonderful and then one must leave - not a choice, but a "have to go" as in this case. The relationship too often suffers and the distance places strain on one to have the same feelings as when together. Your words bring back many memories of times past. I was fortunate not to have one go away to war but I know many who did and changes did happen. Yes, "Eve of Destruction" broke far too many hearts!
Very touching Lydi!! The memories of the good times stay with you, but they came at far too great a price!

I am glad you could identify with the time I spoke of. I thought we were about the same age. Thank.. read more
i had a different kind of relationship to this...but it was long distance with a woman from Poland...
and eventually, as chemically and emotionally explosive as it was, the distance wore us down...and eventually we suffered the Eve of Destruction of us.
this poem is fantastic, and so moving...i relate on many levels and love that song---

"hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace"

i was 1A for awhile...but got lucky...didn't go.

thanks for the poem.

And unfortunately they were never taken care of by the V.A.
Oh, what a poignant final stanza; concise and precise. A powerful poem.
