I Wonder

I Wonder

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

Do you ever wonder?

"

Artwork by Catherine Abel

I wrote it on the napkin

the poem I knew would be goodbye

I mean what was I to do?

You were late

                   again

and I just couldn’t do it anymore

make believe it was okay for you to waste my time

and trample my emotions

I couldn’t pretend

I heard music in the pregnant pauses

not anymore

so I wrote it on the napkin

then kissed the flip side

and the rest should have been history

but even now I wonder

I like this from the standpoint of an amazing woman that would wonder what might have been. So often, I think we look back to a romantic moment....that wasn't as romantic as our romantic heart wanted it to be! I relate, I know I have that little pile of napkins and what ifs and coulda beens. You are a great lady.. still.

Lydi... Thank goodness for the "music"
we hear in the pregnant pauses. We do things
from our heart... and then when we are trampled upon...
we write a goodbye on a napkin... then kiss the flip side
and hope it will be history. Your poetry is
Universal and touches many notes we have
played. truly... Pat

Sweet friend of mine, your reviews are always so lovely. Thank you very much. Lydi**
Romance can be such a cruel and fickle child sometimes. Even when we make that decision to depart from the dead weight of an inconsistent but beloved lover, we're perpetually haunted by musings on what could have been, and could it have changed had we given him/her just one more chance. This piece reminded me of the Eagles song Wasted Time. A sad but beautifully conveyed snapshot of that moment of truth...lovely work as always my friend :)

The fact you would think of an Eagles' song when reading my words is a great honor, Steve. Thanks a.. read more
Beautiful artwork and poetry. I like the old fashion feel of the poem. Writing on a napkin a note and wondering what this truly the ending. No weakness in the excellent poetry.

Oh I see her sitting in a grand cafe, waiting for her lover... between coffee and a smokey area...

Love this very much. Has such brilliant details. I've been here similarly at a time, and far too long putting up with what I did knowing otherwise I wouldn't have. We all have at sometime did the same, it being so wrong to do and expecting us to keep coming back.

I like the intrigue lydia, just wonder if he finally did show up and find the napkin and if he did what would he have done, well it's intriguing.

You always take me to breathless heights of wonder, Lydia. You have clothed your simple words with fabric of sophistication! I love this, I love this! Plus, I can relate to this very well.
