Among the Booze and Holly

Among the Booze and Holly

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

a rhyming romp for the season

"

No, the weather is not icy

but I know when the holidays are near

when the words, “Ch Ch Chia”

on TV I incessantly hear!

The ultimate of presents

my favorite of them all

is the wonderful invention - the “Clapper,”

sold only on TV, not in the mall!

Tool sets for Dads and brothers

even if they’ll never use them

perfumes for Moms and sis,

so your nose can track and never lose them!

Whitman samplers dot the pages

of the Sunday ads,

Barney, Blues Clues, and Elmo,

for the younger lasses and lads!

Hershey kisses are now wrapped

in holiday tradition - red and green

ties and robes galore are sold

the ugliest you’ve ever seen!

Only a few shopping weeks left

get ready for the shopping stampede

retailers are just tickled pink

it does wonders for their greed!

Don’t wait till the last moment to shop

my goodness, that would be a folly

or you may find yourself a casualty

among the booze and holly!

How can they sell all this merchandise?

They won’t, but never fear!

You can buy it all 50% off on December 26th

Then save it for next year!

LOL. There is a simultaneous humor and cynicism throughout this and I can identify with so much of it... and any time I get the pleasure of seeing Lydia Shutter rhyme it is a pleasure sublime. A wonderful look at the "message" that seems to pervade Christmas. ~Jim

dear Lydi... I listen only for Silver
Bells... and love blue lights lined on the
roofs of homes... like falling midnight stars.
I do not care for commercial holidays.
The gift of a lovely smile is the Joy of the
Season. I appreciate the message in
your poem. Our Spirits will fill our
hearts with love. truly... Pat

Thanks, Julie. I don't do it often, but I enjoy it when I do. Lydi**
I can't really comment on this Lyndi as I wait for my usual three ghostly visitors and the door knocker to start talking to me. Bah humbug!
Good idea about the 50% however.

So we have a Scrooge in our midst? Say it aint so! LOL Thanks for the visit, Ken. Lydi**
A rousing rendition with eloquent rhyme and flow concerning the silly season as it falls mercilessly on top of us, when all rational and sensibility is thrown asunder to the delight of the children and I hasten to add, the merchandisers ofcourse!

You don't often do rhyme Lydia but when you do it is equally splendid !

A delight and pleasure to do so Lydia !
This is a sentiment I have each and every year being a Scotsman. Somehow I never get round to it lol. This captures and questions the way in which we are the captives of the retail trade who make much of their profit in the run up to Christmas. Roll on the sales!

Thanks, Ron. Enjoy your day. Lydi**
Christmas, Christmas everywhere, and merchants lure us with hopes their shelves will soon be bare, but I just won't be there!! I walk into the stores and absolutely cringe as I have already seen decorations since well before Halloween........enough of my rant!
I love Christmas and want it to be so much more than the gift giving, except gifts given from the heart, not those of necessity.........'ah, tis a season of love, and goodness and expressions of the heart kind enough to make even the saddest of spirits feel a bit of joy!
Cute poem, and you did some rhyme!.......BRAVO!!, AND HO, HO, HO!!!

Yes, I occasionally do rhyme...these thoughts seemed better said in rhyme. Thanks for the review, S.. read more
get ready for the shopping stampede

retailers are just tickled pink

it does wonders for their greed!- This is why I don't go shopping on Black Friday. No trampling, no stampedes, safe at home...

"or you may find yourself a casualty

among the booze and holly!"- This is hysterical. Excellent. 'Tis the season, but for what?
