someday

someday

A Poem by Lydia Shutter
"

thinking of my mom and dad tonight.

"

searching the “everything” drawer
venturing through
the place where
elastic bands become one
with bent paperclips
disregarding scornful scowls
from out-of-ink ballpoint pens

the coupon graveyard
where expiration dates mingle
with last year’s pocket calendar
and unemployed keys
so sad they’ve no locks to open
clink out the blues
with a tile from two houses ago

i smile
a memory of you
propels a happy tear
down my cheek
“can’t throw a thing out
never know
it might come in handy
someday

untangling an errant
matchbook cover
from the clutches
of a clothespin
i try to
smooth out the rough edges
of my life with
your broken emery board
wondering if
someday
really is today

Lydi... My drawer of feathers from
Angel wings left in dreams of loved
ones who visited me ... Beautiful petals
from flowers left... bring comfort. They
are surrounded by everyday things...
lost but found. Your poetry is reality
with a touch of mystery. truly... Pat

Wonderful use of imagery and the personification of the items in your catch all drawer. I loved your sentiment.

I can feel warm sadness in this piece. The imagery is used in a very clever way, makes my thought wander. Very, very good composition. Thank you for sharing.

This is so touchingly beautiful. The everything drawer can hide a life of many experiences, you have put it to such endearing words... true art. An excellent write.

It was a pleasure.
Oh this poem just pulled at my heart. There are boxes I never open - pictures I don't look at and music I no longer play because these things are haunted. This poem speaks to that .

Powerful ending my friend, and very relate-able for me, as is the happy tear that is shed when remembering those lost. I think of my dad as well, and I know what it's like to hold on to possessions, and how hard it is to part with the slightest items, those "someday" possessions. In fact, the lion's share of my wardrobe was his. Stay strong and remember the positives. Needless to say, I felt this piece in my bones, and it will have a prominent place in my library :)

I am honored. Thank you very much. Lydi**
I can see my soul in this piece, Lydi. How many times I tried to throw away the memoirs of someone closer to me before but made some wounds in my heart...that's how many times I cried while keeping them back to my old chest, hoping that one day I can show that person the marks of my tears in those things.

I am personally touched by this verse:
"i smile
a memory of you
propels a happy tear
down my cheek
“can’t throw a thing out
never know
it might come in handy
someday"

There's no wrong in hoping and wishing, Lydi. "Someday" is my favorite word as a dreamer.
Nice job! Keep it up.

I love this poem. Funny the things that pop into our head while we are doing little every day things.
