solo adventure

solo adventure

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by carol schiff "in a world of her own"

in the dreary domain
of a rainy sunday
i trample a path traveled ten times
     and then ten times
          or perhaps more
as my creaky cranky joints complain
               suddenly
                    just to escape it all
my mind swims off in a puddle
to some destination secret to even me
nowhere near the realm of reality
and here i sit
stagnant in sunday’s existence
impatiently waiting
for my mind to impart tales
of its solo adventure

I love the idea of "a rainy Sunday" and the imaginative trampling of paths back and forth to create adventures. I like the image of your mind wandering away as you sit and patiently wait for it to come back with stories to tell. As if it can be the only one to reach those secret destinations. Our imaginations often go to places that we couldn't possibly reach, like dreams that can't be understood in the waking world. I really love the images you create with your well-chosen words!

your joyful energy can not be contained. Come rain, cloud or sleet you have the means of entertaining yourself and by so doing, bringing the inspirational fruit of your labours to us all!

Lydi, I love the way you can take something as ordinary as a rainy day and turn it into something beautiful. Don't ever dodge those puddles Lydi!

I can tell you Lydi, I feel like I have trampled that path 100 times this morning. But luckily my journey brought me to your beautiful poem. Very well done.

I am happy you found your way to my words, Jack. Thank you so much. Have an easy day. Lydi**
Those rainy days can certainly give us the "Rainy Day Blues" and make us familiar with every creak and groan of our body when they arrive. It is then we hope for the sunshine of a new day to arrive and send them along until the next time they insist on coming back.

I like the way you are able to describe the ordinary in such an extraordinary way -"and here i sit stagnant in sunday's existence" as you dream of better moments on this lonely, dreary afternoon! And another perfect image! I always look forward to the images you choose to accompany your works!!

I am learning to enjoy these times more and more as I grow older... When I was young, I knew how to do this naturally until the culture I live in conditioned me to forget how to enjoy the peaceful surrender to my own imagination in isolated splendor.
A great thought connecting childhood to wisdom and adventure to the confines of the inner voice.

What a marvelous way to spend a damp, dreary Sunday afternoon, a daydream where any door could open up to the possibility of a world of adventure, love and romance!
