Never Once

Never Once

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

"dawn of mourning exhibit in athens"

There is a naked indecency
to the rain slicked night
cobblestones glisten
with a regalia
of unanswered questions
wispy clouds

so terribly fickle

flit from star to star

Draped in street lamp illumination
she watches the scene
remembering paths traveled
in the name of love
                 paths now wearing
the misty raiment of love’s tears

But just as Aphrodite rose

from the white foam of the raging sea
                          she too would rise

indeed, she would
answer all the questions
while walking on a path
of wild rose petals
never again feeling the sting
of the thorny briers
hidden there

I read this poem, not once but many times and gaining a different sense each time. Sometimes there was as sense of giving up and walking out into a rain of hopelessness. Yet again, I sensed the sense of the Phoenix, a soft arising. I do like your style, the short and penetrating style which I could never gain.
Thank you for allowing the read...Ron.

Hello, brilliant. (I did that with a valley girl accent) Seriously, one of the best openers ever.

Smiling here....love that valley girl talk! :) Thanks, Pryde. Lydi**
A broken love can have cataclysmic consequences, some struggle to come to terms with it, though happy to report this person arose like a phoenix from the ashes drawing solace from experience so learned!

This is romantic, elegant & strong read,

paths now wearing
the misty raiment of love’s tears

Simply sublime line...there's much strength & fortitude in this lovely painting or your poetry...

It's my pleasure, sweet Woman!..and thank you.. ~xoxo~:)
you are amazing Lydi, taking a rain soaked cobble stoned street and bringing us from there to the rising of "Aphrodite" (or a young woman) out of the storm and onto the "path of wild rose petals never again feeling the sting of the thorny briars..." your musings make life livable Lydi.. ~~~redzone
ps... "There is a naked indecency
to the rain slicked night.." I loved these lines Lydi they set the tone (straight out of the picture you used)...

I see a theme Lydi...
I like the continuation of purpose. If we just keep moving will can survive this wilderness...
Now I must ask, If Aphrodite is the goddess of love then what will the personification be of this goddess when she walks among the mortals once again? Will she indeed not feel the thorns or will she in fact feel them ever and with each step? Will she be the goddess of perseverance? Will she know how to empathize and feel the penetrations of others tender soles/souls?
It matters little, because what will be will be. I think the world will be a better place when she walks there again.
Lovely...
