HaircutA Poem by LuuucyBased on a dream I had where I saw the perspective of two people, a boy and a girl, who experience a very different change in themselves after they get haircuts.Long lifeless hair, she’s hidden behind it Tangled and strangled and twisted and bit No one knows the girl in the weeds Trying and fighting for someplace to fit Pulled and tugged at in every direction Tears searing and scarring with every rejection The person inside frays and splits at the ends Hidden too deep to see her reflection Then she cuts it all off and lets her face show No places to hide, nowhere to go But to face herself and accept all she’s worth To lift herself up and let herself grow Now they can see who she aims to be They help build her up and set her free With her mask gone, she holds her head high She is who she is and they follow her lead But there is a boy who loses his choice They chop off his hair and they steal his voice So he pushes back the person he was And tries to pretend he’s like other boys But that didn’t work, and it never does The sadness grew deeper the further he dug He hated himself more than ever before In his pit of despair, he lost the light above But hair doesn’t define him and neither do they Not worth a life cut short over the hurt they say They can’t change him -- and neither can he He’s stuck with himself at the end of the day If you cut yourself down, then what will be left? A life lived by someone else? A life of regret? Instead of hating and berating what makes you you, Like who you are and love what you do And you’ll leave a mark on the world we’ll never forget © 2019 LuuucyAuthor's Note
