Two-Faced Habits

Habits that seem good, but have a negative side as well

I laugh

When I’m nervous

When I don’t know what to say

When I should be serious

They don’t think I care

 

I trust

Too quickly

This is starting to fade

Makes me gullible, vulnerable

Don’t open, don’t share

 

I forgive

Too easily

No fight, just make up

I feel nothing but empathy

It’s wearing me out

 

I protect

Your feelings

And bottle mine up

It will hurt you more

So I sweat it out

 

I talk

To myself

Make little vows

That I break in an instant

I can’t even trust me

 

I reflect

My thoughts

By writing them down

My loved ones just know

The smile they see

I really love this poem. It expresses something important about interactions . . . most people have nervous habits & poor means of expression at times, so we need to be more understanding & patient about this process. What often happens, instead: the other person becomes critical of the poor delivery, instead of trying to find & understand what's really being delivered. You've expressed all that by using specifics (showing instead of telling -- and also, details make our writing more original). Good job!
