To Know This Life Was Good

To Know This Life Was Good

A Poem by Rev. David J. Schreffler
"

I want to know one life - the life of Jesus

"
Are we free?
Are we slaves to things others convince us we need?
In our world even the most coveted things are worthless
without the ones who covet them - value is assigned by those
who have no value except in assigning...

I sit holding the thing I didn't know I needed yesterday,
but today's voices warned me I couldn't live without it - will it
buy me one more day in my unknown tomorrows?

I can't know every life; I wish I could.
I wish I could know all people, the unknown and the great lives alike -
in one great knowing. How can we live with one foot in the past and one
in the now? But what is now? And the past - it is not interpreted until it
no longer means what it meant.

I want to know one life. To know this life was good.
To know the life of Jesus - he is life.
Know life? If so, then you will be a slave to no thing.
Know this life?
Good.

" How can we live with one foot in the past and one in the now?" I love this line! I think that it's a question we should all ask or have asked or are currently asking ourselves. I have a similar poem I wrote that you may like to read if you have time, called Path of Thorns.

I kind of was confused about the ending where you say, "Know life? so, then you will be a slave to no thing. Know this life? Good." I feel like there should be a differentiation between the two "knows" here for some reason, like "know" and "no" if you know what I mean. Have you thought about restructuring the ending by any chance?

This free-form is good, but I think the challenge you should set for yourself is to add structure. Balance the beats of each sentence or add rhyme. This could set this piece apart.

Just a thought,
Carrie.

Great piece of work!
I do too want to know the life of Christ and strive daily to be Christ like,
but will always fall short of the glory of God, but putting one foot in front
of the other and striding towards righteousness is my responsibility!
I will never be sinless but I can sin less and take pride in doing so, great
thought provoking write, PTL and b-blessed!
