The Mermaid
For Karli Harbord............... I love you to the moon and back....,,, On a full moon-night Upon a silvered wave My gift rushed into my arms And forever changed my days. A little white halo surrounded her little head I held her every night and kissed her in her bed. I told her stories of the moon and the gift it one night gave. I told her how the sea had brought her to me, cradled in a wave. I told her about captains, sailors and ships of the deep blue sea. I told her that of all the treasures in the ocean, she was a treasure to me. I told her that we would swim alone but that she should never fear; The ocean knew we would be together and forever I would be near. We laughed and danced those days to the symphony of the brine Without a worry, without a care all we had was time. On the days when the stormed raced in, I held her in my arms I ran my fingers through her curls and filled her hair with charms. When the squall was at its worse, we huddled on the ocean floor We searched for wonders and stayed far from dangers of the shore. Her curls grew longer, her strength and courage stronger; Her eyes were black pearls locked in treasure troves of deepness They held in all the love and all my treasured secrets. Her soul was brighter than the moon which had brought her to the sea. I had given her all I had and now she gave it back to me. Her beauty was that of legends which stretched from shore to shore. I knew that I could not keep her hidden with me forevermore. So there came a day, I would have to tell about the changes of the tide. I told her that the hour would come when she would have to leave my side I reminded her of our days, drifting in the ebb and flow; how we went, where we’ve come and now where she would go. I told her if the skies call your journey, I will never be too far I gave you fins to wander and the heavens gave you stars. If you should ever need to find your way back home, I would always be here waiting for you in the calm just like the river stone. We reminisced of the days we splashed upon the ocean’s edge, How we held eachothers hands as we dove from the highest ledge. We knew it then but it never mattered what awaited us in the deep. I told her how now she would do that still, without me to help her leap. I thought of the little fish that I use to teach to swim. I thought of the laughter she gave to me which filled my ocean’s brim. I thought no matter what the future holds, those memories remain I told her to look to love and dream, and all the beauty she’d retain. I walked my mermaid to the shore and placed her upon a silvery wave, I looked up and the thanked the moon for the gift to me she one day gave. I told my mermaid I’d be standing there as a beacon in her night, I told her she had done the same for me on my loneliest of nights. I knew one day she’d give her love boundless beyond these waters But now, I had to give back to the moon which gave me my precious daughter. © 2013 LunaticaReviews
