Are You Still In Love Tonight?

Are You Still In Love Tonight?

A Poem by Luna Lazarus
"

No.

"
Bloodied and broken,

Bruised yet still beating.

Covered in dirt

And stabbed by gravel. . .

Lying in a ditch

With a thick morning fog

Accompanying the growing daylight.

Almost frozen over,

And certainly forgotten by its tormentor,

It repeats its deadly song

Of woe.

Stuttering and stammering

Over every other beat,

It is stubborn about keeping up the job

It’d known since it was first created.

Sunlight’s rays broke through,

Leaving dried blood caked around it

At the bottom of this ditch for the damned.

It's disgusting what filth the heart willingly lies in just to hang on that little bit longer. I've seen the worst of it only recently with a friend of mine: sympathy for the Devil. It immediately came to mind when I read this poem; I think you captured that concept rather well here. The imagery of the heart lying tattered, torn and martyred at the bottom of a ditch, bloody and destitute -- and almost as though the heart itself is a separate entity from the self; prodigal and out of control. And afterwards we have to pick up the pieces.
Well, I wasn't in love before I started reading and in fact I wasn't even in love with the idea of love...Your poem has seconded that emotion.
