A Tragedy

A Tragedy

A Chapter by Luke Rizo

After breakfast, Jake came over and gave Blake an outfit for the party; black jeans with a tear at the knee, a white crew neck T-shirt, and a red beanie.

"Jake, what's this for?" Blake asked confused, but appreciated.

"For your date. Hurry already, come out of the bathroom." Jake said as he knocked on the door to the bathroom.

"Date? With who? M- Mallory?" He sounded a bit flustered.

Silence pervaded the air. All of a sudden, Jake said, "Well, I was actually talking about Daniel. Do you like Mallory?"

It became quiet once again. Blake stepped out of the bathroom and the two boys looked at each other. "Daniel? You're joking, right?" Blake asks wanting to avoid discussion about Mallory.

Jake smiles, "Yea I was joking, but do you really like Mallory? You have to ask Daniel if you can date her because they're practically brother and sister. I mean he was supposed to sleep over last night, but you took his place instead."

Blake sighed as he ran his fingers through his hair, "I don't know if I like Mallory. I mean, I do like her, but I don't know. Would she like, ever go out with a guy who's missing a kidney or has scars stretching for miles without end?"

"If she likes your personality, I'm sure she wouldn't mind any of that. She helps you get away from your bullies, and you've only known each other for a few months. She wouldn't do that if she didn't care about you." Jake looked to the ground and smiled, "I like her too, but I want you to have her."

"Wait, you like her?" Blake asked with a tear in his eye.

"Don't worry dude, if anyone deserves an angel like her, it's you. Now come on, it's date time, kiddo." He said smiling.

Jake, Blake, and I all got to Blake's house and when he entered the house everyone invited yelled surprise.

It looked like the whole eleventh grade was invited. Everyone except Derick and his goons.

I didn't get to meet his mother, I didn't even get to see her. It was like she was nonexistent. But it makes sense, because Blake said she had surgery, so she should be resting.

Most of the people were in the pool, and a few trouble makers were hiding in the corner of the yard smoking pot. But other than that, the party was great.

"Mal," Daniel called out to me, "The birthday boy locked himself in his room, can you go get him out of there? We want to cut the cake soon."

I nodded in response and walked upstairs. It was easy to tell which room was his because he had a sign on his door stating "Don't bother me unless you have band merch for me."

Why did he lock himself in his room? Is the party boring? I thought to myself while knocking on his bedroom door.

"Blake, it's Mallory, can I come in?" There was silence. Then, all of a sudden, the door swung open and I was pulled unexpectedly into the dark, moonlit room.

"Sorry, I just don't work well in crowds." He locked the door once again and sat on his bed.

Blake patted the spot next to him as he hunched his back, "Do you... Do you like anyone?"

I sat next to him and half smiled, "Like a crush? I have one. Do you?"

He shifted a bit in his seat before answering, "uh, yea. I have a crush on someone, too."

Blake spoke again, this time holding my hand, "Mallory, I- I like you."

I was about to speak when there was a loud knock on the door followed by a male's voice yelling, "Blake open the f*****g door, you piece of s**t."

Unfortunately, it was Derick, I stood up and headed for the door. "No Mallory, please don't," Blake said reaching for me.

I could tell he was terrified, his eyebrows furrowed in worry, he maintained eye contact with me, showing that he really didn't want me to open the door, but that only gave me more will to open it and defend Blake.

I do wish I hadn't because once I opened it, a guy held me back and the rest of Derick's friends dragged Blake out of the room.

"Stop it, stop hurting him. He hasn't done anything to you, leave him alone!" I yelled and yelled, but everyone ignored me, "I'll call the police if you hurt him! Please, let him go!"

Everyone at the party just stared, why won't anyone help him? Where is Jake or Daniel? Why does Derick hate him so much?

"Bring her, too. She has to watch." Derick ordered with a sinister tone and walked outside.

Blake managed to escape their grip, "Derick you need to leave." He demanded, he was on the verge of tears.

The sound of his voice as he tried to suppress his tears was the most hurtful thing to hear.

"You really think you can order me around when you're the one who's crying? F****n' p***y. Guys, pin him to the ground." Derick said.

"Stop it, stop it now!" I cried out trying to escape from the guy holding me down.

They chased Blake around the pavement until he tripped on a curb, and still no one helped. Tears ran down my face, they ran down my face because I thought they were going to beat Blake up in front of me. I was wrong, far wrong...

I couldn't believe what was happening right before my very eyes. My tears stopped rolling down my face, I was disgusted and terrified at the same time.

"Hold him down, don't let him move. Let's see, what else can we take from our beloved Blakey? The other kidney?"

Blake was bawling as he yelled in horror, "I have nothing left for you to take. I have nothing left."

Everyone watching had their hands over their mouths and eyes. I wouldn't blame them, it really was terrorizing.

Paralyzing was the scene, I could only watch as Blake's face was painted crimson with the blood that ran down and out of his left eye. Derick had decided that was what he wanted to take next.

Blake yelled as he choked in his own blood, "Stop! Stop! I have nothing left! Leave me alone... please."

"Man up, b***h. Hold him down, I need to cut the cord on his eye. He's moving too damn much." Derick said with no feelings.

How could a bunch of juniors have the audacity to harm an innocent being? How could they not feel anything while tearing Blake's eye out?

"He got it, Derick has Blake's eye! F**k yeah!" One of Derick's accomplices yelled out in pride, like they achieved the unachievable.

"Run, run before the cops show up." Another one says as he laughs in amusement.

The boy holding me had let go when I stopped resisting, I only just noticed when I saw the teens running off into the dark.

Jake went into Blake's house to get his mother and everyone else called their parents and cried.

I crawled towards Blake, he finally passed out. I gently rested his head in my lap, his face was vermilion mixed with his tears and the dirt in which his face landed in when he tripped.

What would happen to Blake now? Would I still be able to see those beautiful, dark brown eyes that sparkled so bright? He can't die, he can't leave me. We still have so many things left to do together. I sobbed.

The sirens from the ambulance could barely be heard in the background.

"Please be okay... Please?" I hoped as I planted my forehead against his.
