Distraction

Distraction

A Poem by Ally Baker

You see that girl?
The one who smiles so brightly?
Who laughs so loudly?
Has no cares in the world?

She smiles so brightly
To distract from the pain
Flooding her swollen eyes
And raised lines on her wrists.

She laughs so loudly
To distract from the emptiness
In her voice and actions
From one too many good-byes

She seems like she doesn't care
Because she's terrified to,
Knowing that she'll be let down again,
Not knowing if she can get back up.

She's a master of deception
Her entire being -- a distraction
To hide what's underneath --

The world forever blind
To her hidden demons.
