I Will Always Rest With Him

I Will Always Rest With Him

A Poem by Ally Baker

Voices raise

Cheers roar

Encouragement is shouted

Discouragement is whispered

I run down the hall

And push through the crowd,

A terrible, gut-wretching

Feeling tumbling inside of me

Standing on my toes, I peer

over shoulders, getting a glimpse

of the scene playing out that

grabbed the attention of so many

Fists were being thrown,

Tackles were being made,

Blood was being shed,

And bones were cracking.

They are all moving so fast

Its hard to tell who anyone is

But one face stands out most

From all the rest and I gasp

His sandy blonde hair, usually kempt

Is dishevled and has knots

The color is darkened dramatically

By the ugly tint of scarlet

His strong jaw,

Is scewed slighty to the left.

His perfectly white teeth tinted

With that same ugly scarlet.

His neat and pressed clothes

Are crumpled and torn

And His left hand, bloodied

and bent, hangs useless at His side.

My throat closes up as He

Stops to catch his breath

And I spot the other boy

Steathily sneaking up on Him

I try to find my voice somehwere

But it has tucked tail and run.

I'm left helpless in the crowd

as the boy places his hands on His head.

With something resembling grace,

The other boy snaps His head to the side.

One last breath as He gasped when

His eyes caught mine, light shinging through.

Then the light was gone as

He slid to the ground, His body limp.

A scream tears from my throat

As I rush over, holding Him to me.

They tell me to leave Him now.

I can not, I will not.

No matter what, I promise

I will always rest with Him

...Even if i must

Meet the same fate.
