He Stood and Stared

He Stood and Stared

A Poem by Ally Baker

my hand brushes over

its prickly surface

a small pinch of pain in my finger

as a small stream of red

pools out of the cut

i take a ladder

climbing it slowly

planting each step firmly

before taking another

closer to the top

i take the rope

and swing it around the banister

then i make a knot

and pull hard to secure it

ignoring the burning on my palms

climbing down from the ladder

i move it aside

and replacing it

is a tall stool

but it is too tall

i take another

no, this one is too short

i look to my last

and place it under the rope

ahhh... just right.

wrapping the rope around my neck

was just so easy

i put it on, over my head

just as i would do with a necklace

and let it lie there

i stand on my stool

waiting for the door

to swing open at last

not much later, it does

and there he is

his eyes land on the rope

fitting so perfectly around my neck

i smile at him

so sweetly

and count to five

one... two... three...

he just stares

four...

not moving

five...

i kick the stool away

i drop the letter

with his name printed neatly on the front

i feel the air die away

i see him; still staring

before everything goes dark

i see him turn and leave

no emotions coming over him

he didn't even say or do anything

he just stood... and stared

Very sad and emotional.... He's a rather apathetic character, isn't he? Wow. I'm stunned by your word usage and rhythm in the poem. Great job.
