3 - The Keep Quarters

3 - The Keep Quarters

A Chapter by Ally Baker

Leeli walks into her and Meefa’s room, looking for her. “There you are, Meefa!” she exclaims somewhat quietly. “I have been looking for you everywhere. You of all people should know that Slate has given us the night off! You should be having fun with the rest of us. Mayhee keeps asking about you,” Leeli tells her, elbowing her and winking.

Meefa looks at Leeli and smiles, wishing that she could talk to her about how she feels about her Keeper. Of course, she cannot because it is forbidden for a Mortal to have any kind of personal relationship with a Crystal. Also, Leeli has a huge mouth and a love for gossip.

“Well, then I guess it would be rude to keep him in agony about my whereabouts for much longer, wouldn’t it?” Meefa asked, teasingly.

Leeli smiled in response and jumped to her feet. She outstretched her arm, offering her hand to Meefa. Meefa took and Leeli helped her stand up. They ran out to the common room of the Keep Quarters and joined the others.

“Meefa, it’s your turn now,” Mayhee tells her, his arms wrapped around her small frame as they sit in a circle with the others. She smiles at him and scoots off of his lap, standing up.

Meefa walks to the middle of the circle of Keeps and takes a deep breath. She focuses oh the chair sitting in the middle of the circle. Instead of sitting on it, she stares at it intently, her face a mask of concentration.

Suddenly, the chair slowly starts to rise in the air, wobbling as it does so. Meefa’s face is turning red, her cheeks puffed out as she continues to stare at the chair. It raises about a foot before falling to the ground again.

When it hits the ground Meefa lets out a huge breath and is met with the sound of applause from the rest of the Keeps. “Wow, Meefa!” Mayhee says, rushing over to her. “That was amazing! You raised it a whole foot! You’ve only been able to raise something that heavy an inch or two. But a whole foot! That’s positively amazing!” he says as he holds her tight.

“Aw!” the rest of the Keeps say in unison at the sight. Almost all of the Keeps were in the common room now since they had been let off at 10 and the next day was their personal day, which was very uncommon for Keepers to give their Keeps.

Meefa smiles and hugs him back awkwardly. He picks up on this instantly of course.

“Why do I feel that you are uncomfortable?” Mayhee asks, concerned.

Meefa thinks about what to tell him before answering. “I’m sorry. I’m not uncomfortable. I am just really tired I guess; running around the mansion all day. You know how it is,” she tells him, hoping that he doesn’t detect the hint of untruthfulness in her voice.

He nods to her answer, not showing or telling whether or not he believes her or not. “Would you like to go to sleep now, then?” he asks, still holding her in his arms. His long black hair falls over his completely black eyes, hiding them from Meefa’s seeking eyes.

“No, I want to stay up with the rest of you. You know how I hate to be the first one up,” she reminds him as they walk back to where they were sitting before.

Mayhee sits down first and then holds out his arms to Meefa. She sits down and curls up in his lap, tucking her head into his broad chest. She closes her eyes, starting to doze off as she pretends that it is Slate who is holding her and not Mayhee.
