2 - The School

Slate sees the School coming into view up ahead of him and flies higher into the sky and then nose dives towards the School’s landing pad on the roof. When he is not too far from it, he lets gravity take over and tucks into a ball as soon as he lands on his feet. Rolling to a stop, he stands back up again laughing at how much fun that always is for him.

He walks over to the plastic tube and steps inside. “Galaxy of the Leegans,” Slate says out loud telling the computer system inside the tube which office he would like to go to.

“Authority required. Please state your name,” the tube says in response.

“Slate of the Leegans.”

Suddenly, Slate is sucked down the tube, total darkness surrounding him except for the few office rooms that pass him. Finally, it slows and the opens to show Galaxy’s large office. The round desk sits in the middle of it, with moving bookshelves on two of the walls, while the other two hold the doors and a floor to ceiling window on looking the city central in Leegan County. There is no one in the room so Slate walks over to the hover couch and sits down expecting to wait a while for Galaxy to come meet him. Looking out the window, Slate is reminded of the history of his family. Of what he will always be. It gives him great pain knowing that he has always been destined to be a great Leegan like everyone in his family before him. He could never be normal. With this thought in his head, he punches the pillow next to him. His fits flies through the pillow and into the couch almost making it all the way through.

He pulls his arm out just as the walk-in door next to the tube door opens. “Upset, are we?” Galaxy asks as she breezes into the room. Watching her you would think that she was a Glider, a person who floats in the air most of the time, but really she just has a very graceful way of walking.

“My apologies, I did not mean to break the couch. I was merely exerting my anger without thinking about my actions first.”

Galaxy nods and goes to sit in an arm chair facing the couch that Slate is sitting on.

“So, mother, why did you request for me to come to the School at once? Is one of the students having trouble?” Slate asks, thinking about all of the other times he had to help his mother with uncooperative students.

“No, no, no; nothing like that this time, Slate. This time it has to do with the odd population decrease of Leegan County. We’ve had people move away before, but they have always been families moving for a new job or to be with distant relatives. Lately, the people moving away have been moving away by themselves and no contact has been made with them after they leave Leegan County.”

Slate looks confused by this information. “What do you mean, mother? I do not understand it.”

Galaxy looks Slate in the eyes, her mouth set into a stern line. “Slate. These people are not moving out of Leegan County and not talking to anyone. They are disappearing… completely,” she tells him, her voice stern and serious.
