FiveA Chapter by Ally Baker
Mark is sitting in his corner watching the others that are piled in the middle of the darkened room. He has a good sense of time since he knows, well, everything. They should be waking up soon, he thinks to himself. Sitting up a bit straighter, Mark attempts to turn his scowl into a friendly smile but does not succeed. He sighs just as he ears the awakening moan of one of the Newbies. He looks over to Reagan who is sitting a few feet from himself. “You gonna be on the Welcome Wagon with me this time?” Mark asks her. She looks over to him, surprised that he is speaking aloud. “Sure, I will be on the Welcome Wagon with you this time. But you know that I do not like making friends with the Newbies so I can not promise that I will be all that welcoming… or nice.” Mark chuckles and smiles. “The first one to wake up should be Laura. She was only tied up and gagged. Then they gassed her with the temporary knock out gas before they brought her here.” Reagan nods, absorbing this information. Suddenly a short, thin girl with pale skin and long black hair slowly stands up. She glances around the room frantically with a wild look deep in her eyes. Within seconds of waking up she starts to hyperventilate, falling to the ground. Mark rolls his eyes, used to this same reaction when someone first wakes up here. Mark stares at her shaking body, barely concentrating, but still managing to get her breathing under control. Then he has her walk over to where he and Reagan sit. Laura sits down with a calm look on her face. “What is this place?” Laura asks Mark and Regan. No matter the calmness of her body language and words, the fear deeply hidden in Laura’s eyes were noticeable once away to people, if you could really call them that, like Mark and Reagan. Reagan replies to her question before Mark can. “This is our room,” she says, gesturing between herself and Mark. “I guess it is also yours too,” she says with not a not too pleased tone of voice and gesturing towards the clump of unconscious bodies strewn together in the middle of the room. A confused look enters Laura’s eyes on her calm face. This time Mark replies first. “You will understand it more soon enough. First though, you must tell us why you are so special." Fear re-enters Laura's deep hazel colored eyes. She nods though because of unspoken but heard words from Mark, no doubt. Laura takes a deep breath before speaking her mind. Truly, she only needed to speak for Reagan’s benefit. But to know whether she knows that yet or not is impossible to say. “The reason why they think I am so special is because when I was only a toddler, 3 years old, my parents and I were in some sort of car explosion. The police could not figure out what kind of explosion though. Anyways, my parents died… blown to pieces.” Laura chokes on the words. “But I… I was fine. I didn’t even have a scratch on me.” Mark and Reagan look at each other, thinking the same thing. They are going to use her for a living suicide soldier. “But the thing is though…” Laura begns but is cut off by another awakening moan.
Reagan sighs. “Tell us later. It is time to welcome the others. We need to have the first meeting.” Mark and Reagan © 2008 Ally BakerReviews
