FourA Chapter by Ally Baker
Jonathon Jonathon is walking back from the local McDonald’s that is down the street from Jacksonville High School when his phone starts to ring. He pulls the phone out of his school blazer’s pocket and reads the screen. Julie.
“Hello?” he asks even though he knows that she is there. “Hey!” singsongs a pretty voice from the other side of the phone line. “What’s up? I thought you had stayed in the café with your friends for lunch today.” “Oh I did! I just felt like calling you, so I escaped to the bathroom alone. Which, by the way, isn’t an easy thing to do you know.” Jonathon laughs and smiles at Julie even though she is not with him. His friends walk ahead a little ways, giving him a bit of privacy to talk with Julie. “So what are your plans for tomorrow night?” asks the sweet voice that Jonathon loves so much. “Hmm. I’m not sure yet because it depends. What are you doing tomorrow?” A giggle comes from the other side of the line followed by “Well… I was thinking that we could see that movie, that horror film about zombies. Anyways, I thought that we could see it, just you and me this time with none of your soccer buddies tagging along with us.” “Yea. That sounds like fun,” Jonathon says and then realizes how he’d been walking. “Hey Jewels, I gotta go now. I’m almost back on school property. I’ll see you soon. I love you.” “Okay, bye Jon. I love you too.” then the breathing from the other line turns into a dial tone. Jonathon sighs as he closes his cell phone and slides it into his school blazer’s pocket. Just as he is sliding his hands into the pockets of his school uniform’s khaki pants, someone starts to walk very closely to Jonathon, tailing him. Jonathon notices this right away and casually starts to pick up his pace, concentrating immensely to keep it humanly realistic. The figure that he sees is still following him closely behind as if it were floating, like a child’s balloon tied to their wrist. Instead of turning right into the school’s parking lot, Jonathon turns left to cross the street into the woods. Paranoid, Jonathon thinks he hears a chuckle from behind him. As soon as Jonathon has the cover of the trees he picks up his speed past top human ability, weaving through the trees with great ease. Once he gets to a small clearing he rushes up one of the many trees that surrounds it. From a high branch, Jonathon looks down into the clearing, awaiting the cloaked man’s entrance. He does not notice a cloaked man entering the meadow though. What he notices is the childish symbol made by flowers. Jonathon feels something hit the back of his head from behind him and loses his balance on the branch. Falling from the tree and passing out, the last thing Jonathon sees is the cloaked man standing on the branch holding a shark rock spackled with bright, almost pink blood. He is smiling, Jonathon thinks before hitting the ground and going completely unconscious. © 2008 Ally BakerReviews
