Landon(2)

A Chapter by Ally Baker

Landon walks into Magnen’s room/office. Magnen had sent word around to have Landon come to his office to talk about his day’s chores.

“Ah, Landon. Here you are. I want you to be hunting today. You will take over Enden’s shift. He is worried to hunt right now, so he will be helping skin and de-bone the catch. Is that okay with you?” He asks in his voice that means that even if it isn’t okay with you, you still have to do it.

“Yes,” Landon says. “But may I ask why is so worried to hunt today?”

“Yes that is a perfectly reasonable question. The other day during his last shift, Enden saw someone in the trees. A girl. He did not recognize her from The Colony. He saw her move quickly through the trees and on the ground, tracking animals, hunting. He is afraid that she is some sort of new Wild and is scared to be in the woods while she is still lurking around,” Magnen tells Landon.

“Is that what you believe?” Landon asks.

“No, I do not believe that she is a new Wild. I believe that she is from another colony in the area. Although no one in our colony seems to believe that there are more colonies out there. But you will all have the proof you so desperately seek one day and you will believe that there are other colonies out there.”

Landon nods and stands. Magnen does not tell him to stay, so he leaves and goes to the hunting room to get his supplies for his new shift. When he walks into the room of supplies, Dean is in the room.

“Hey Landon, what are you up to?”

“Magnen wants me to take over Enden’s shift today so I’m just getting my knife,” Landon tells Dean.

“How come that’s the only thing you ever hunt with? Why don’t you use one of the bows? Or spears? Or traps? We have plenty of things to hunt with other than that old knife.”

“My father hunted with this knife, and it’s the only thing left of him. He hunted with this knife his whole life and I am determined to do the same.” Landon has a bitter tone to his voice, Dean having picked at one of his raw nerves.

Without saying a goodbye Landon walks out of the room, and walks quickly through The Colony to the hunting exit.

When outside in a tree, he immediately catches sight of something, someone, in a tree near him. Then, suddenly, a girl jumps from a tree landing perfectly. Could this be who Enden was afraid of? How could he be afraid of her? She is obviously not a Wild. Too ..pretty. She has to be from The Colony. But she doesn’t look like anyone from there. She’s… well beautiful.
